    a number of community partners Mission To promote education evidenced based practice and research addressing the major public health problems associated with substance use disorders Research Current National Institute on Drug Abuse funded study of the effectiveness of mindfulness based stress reduction as an adjunct to therapeutic community treatment This is a 4 year behavioral therapies trial 2004 2008 Participating in an exploratory study P20 with Baylor College of Medicine to examine the relationship between alcohol and drug misuse and elder self neglect Collaborating with M D Anderson Study of Group Therapy for Nicotine Dependence using mindfulness based stress reduction Consulting on grant at Rice University to design substance abuse prevention program for adolescents Recently completed project to design and implement an HIV AIDS and substance abuse prevention program for African American adolescents in a faith based setting 1999 2001 Funded by the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention Faculty The Center provides direction for Project MAINSTREAM a federally funded initiative of the Association of Medical Education and Research in Substance Abuse to educate multidisciplinary health professional faculty nationwide MAINSTREAM fellows are then expected to enhance the curricula of their disciplines to include substance abuse content Four successive federally funded faculty development grants have provided substance abuse training for 14 multidisciplinary faculty in the Health Science Center 1990 2001 Service The Center provides consultation to the Texas Screening Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment for substance abuse SBIRT initiative and InSight a major project to make these services available for clients of the Harris County Hospital District The Center is a partner in the Houston Harris County Demand Treatment Project to improve all substance abuse services in the area The Center for Substance Abuse Education Prevention and Research Located on the 6th floor of the School of Nursing and Student Community
