    Professorship in Oncology Nursing has been promoted to Professor with tenure in the Department of Family Health at the UTHealth School of Nursing The appointment was official on Sept 1 We offer her our warmest congratulations said Associate Dean for Research Interim Nancy Bergstrom Ph D R N This is a red letter day for us because Terri is one of our own she finished her Ph D here at UTHealth joined the School of Nursing faculty with an MD Anderson Cancer Center joint appointment and moved from assistant to associate to professor Armstrong received her B S N from the University of Akron her master s degree and post master s nurse practitioner degrees from the Ohio State University School of Nursing and her Ph D from UTHealth School of Nursing She joined the nursing school as a full time faculty member in Sept 2007 Also an advanced practice nurse in the Department of Neuro Oncology at The University of Texas M D Anderson Cancer Center Armstrong has worked in the field of neuro oncology since 1992 Her current research has a focus on symptom assessment and management and myelotoxicity She regularly publishes articles in peer reviewed journals and

    a clinical assistant professor and track director of the Adult Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner program Kyle Kincaid D N P R N now a UTHealth instructor in nursing Laura J Griffin D N P R N an alumna now at Methodist Sugar Land Hospital Mary Lou Warren M S N R N Sarah Livesay M S N R N Louisa Chika Ikpeama M S N R N and Melissa McLenon M S N R N I wrote a case study on a patient with the diagnosis of severe sepsis because severe sepsis and septic shock affect over 700 000 people annually and the mortality is up to 70 percent said student author Mary Lou Warren Patients with cancer are more at risk for developing severe sepsis As DNPs we need to be leaders in updating our teams with the latest evidence and recommendations and establishing methods to standardize care based on these recommendations Several of the student authors will be graduating May 4 from the D N P program My published article is on a topic dear to my heart which is the use of non invasive positive pressure ventilation NIPPV support to treat pulmonary diseases said Louisa Ikpeama a 2009 12 PARTNERS Scholarship recipient What makes the topic significant is that NIPPV is a non invasive ventilation option that can be used and have proven through evidence to be very effective for select group of patients but most often under utilized in medical care Ikpeama said that after receiving her D N P degree I plan to continue practicing as an acute care nurse practitioner at the bedside full time and be involved in formal nursing education on a part time basis School of Nursing faculty co authors are Ruppert plus Joanne V Hickey Ph D R N
