    the Education Mentorship category Hodges was among 30 Texas regional finalists honored at the Texas Nursing Excellence Gala on Aug 17 at the Houston Omni Galleria At the event one nurse in each category Advancing Leading the Profession Clinical Care Inpatient Education Mentorship Home Community Ambulatory Care Patient Staff Management and Volunteerism Service was named a Texas regional winner Each of the six Texas winners now will move on to the national program The Education Mentorship category recognizes RNs who have contributed to nursing s body of knowledge through formal nursing education skills training or continuing education who have guided supported or influenced nurses career development in meaningful measurable ways through professional nursing mentorship One nominator a former student said that she stays proactive about putting patients safety first because I was given the confidence to do so by Dr Hodges we were taught not to let our technique slip up or our standards loosen Other nominators wrote that Hodges stands up for students and is accessible leaving her cell phone on and responding to calls and emails quickly Six national winners from among 54 regional winners will be announced and featured in NURSE com magazines later in the fall Miranda Kelly D N P who works at Memorial Hermann The Woodlands Hospital was selected as the Texas winner in the Clinical Care Inpatient category She is a graduate of UTHealth School of Nursing s critical care CNS 1994 and post Master s ACNP 2000 programs During the Aug 17 event Susan D Ruppert Ph D R N assistant dean and chair of the Department of Acute Continuing Care and Amy O Calvin Ph D R N associate professor of clinical nursing were presented with certificates in recognition of their outstanding performance and contributions to the nursing profession during the

    the Class of 2011 will add to the 7 937 alumni of the School of Nursing in this its 38th year of existence Hodges was cited by her students as a caring and concerned faculty member and a great motivator who has an endless supply of encouragement One nominator wrote She embodies all the qualities of who I aspire to be as a nurse patient kind knowledgeable and compassionate and she communicates her desire to see us do well every day Another student wrote Dr Hodges wants each and every student that comes through her class to succeed and become a wonderful nurse she truly cares Hodges joined the nursing school s faculty in 2009 after earning her doctorate from The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio She also received her M S N and B S N degrees at UTHSC San Antonio following her Associate Degree in Nursing A D N from Angelo State University in 1989 She is a member of UTHealth s Consortium on Aging with research areas of interest in heart failure and the health related quality of life In another sign of her frequently mentioned willingness to go above and beyond Hodges recently was the Chili Cook off head chef of her department s Shock Shock Shock Chili team Students at each of the six UTHealth schools choose a John P McGovern Outstanding Teacher for stimulating curiosity promoting professional development and contributing to students abilities to think creatively The awards announced at commencement ceremonies are made possible by an endowment from the John P McGovern Foundation The other School of Nursing candidates for the 2011 McGovern Outstanding Teacher Award were Penelope Benedik Ph D CRNA Nancy Bergstrom Ph D R N Amy Calvin Ph D R N Stacy Drake M S N
