    CAFES has earned an outstanding reputation for excellence in education and service to the region nation and the world since 1912 and is consistently ranked as one of the top undergraduate agricultural programs in the nation UW River Falls UWRF features the only agricultural engineering technology program in the state one of the largest dairy science programs in the nation as well as an agricultural studies program that gives you the flexibility to design an individualized program Our facilities include computer labs food processing plants a greenhouse complex and two laboratory farms with animal and crop production enterprises These facilities as well as the College s internship program and student organizations contribute to our commitment to hands on and engaging learning experiences inside and outside the classroom The Dairy Pilot Plant Renovation began with a 100 000 gift from the Wisconsin Cheese Makers Association in June 2013 Its fundraising efforts continue and the project is anticipated to be completed January 2016 The College of Agriculture Food and Environmental Sciences celebrated its 100 year anniversary during the 2012 13 school year CABME was made possible through a 250 000 gift from CHS Inc and is led by Brenda Boetel professor of agricultural economics and UW Extension agricultural marketing specialist Dean s Welcome News Events The Valentine s Day Flower Sale sponsored by the Horticulture Society will be held in the Ag Science building near the Dean s Office on Wednesday Feb 10 and in the University Center on Thursday Feb 11 and Friday Feb 12 Cut flowers roses carnations mum etc can be purchased individually or as an arrangement More than 800 000 in grants have been awarded to UW River Falls Plant and Earth Science department faculty The three grants include one to Dr Brian Smith for the development of

    the Wetland Reserve Program Team to mark the process of wetland restorations and assisted the Soil Scientist in taking soil samples Being afforded the opportunity to have such a broad array of experiences with the USDA NRCS allowed me to decide exactly what it was I wanted to do once I finished school I am confident that my internship experience will help jump start my career with the USDA NRCS My advice to students that are seeking internships is not to be afraid to apply to locations farther away from home or school Branching out will open up a number of opportunities for internships as well as allow you to experience another part of the state country or even the world Katie Katie Radke Ag Business Major Co op Agronomy Intern Land O Lakes Winfield Solutions Farmers Coop Supply and Shipping West Salem WI I chose this internship because I thought it was a great opportunity to expand my knowledge in the Agronomy field I have a family friend that works with WinField who told me about the internship The more I read about the position the more I liked what it entailed My internship consisted of working in the fertilizer plant taking soil and tissue samples scouting fields attending Answer Plot Sessions sales etc I really enjoyed working with the growers in particular and I loved the hands on experience I would recommend that CAFES students pursue a summer internship because it opens the doors to so many new and exciting experiences Start applying early in your college career and try a variety of internships until you find what you like Rick Rick Ingli Conservation Major Conservation Intern Nugget Lake County Park Plum City WI I am a Conservation major at UWRF and recently interned at Nugget Lake County Park in Plum City WI Initially I spoke with my advisor at UW River Falls about possible internships and he gave me a list of contacts to reach out to I ended up interviewing at Nugget Lake and was hired shortly after My experience involved a variety of activities ranging from park maintenance to public relations What I enjoyed most was working with a great staff and interacting with the public I gained valuable experience which will in turn be a great asset in the future The CAFES Internship Office was helpful in setting up my internship and giving me advice as needed I would encourage students who are seeking an internship to meet with your adviser as well as the internship office Get help determining what your interests are early on and find the internship that suits you best Rachel Rachel Kroeplien Ag Education Major Lab Technician Intern Hartung Brothers Inc Bowling Green OH During my internship I was involved collecting and testing samples working with trucking and performing day to day tasks to keep the tank yard running smoothly Once the cucumber harvesting season started I helped unload the trailers and tested the new stock to get a
