  • How to Apply | Keegan Traveling Fellowship | Vanderbilt University
    the Office of Active Citizenship and Service 305 Sarratt Student Center Rand Hall by 5 00 PM Monday January 18 2016 No applications will be accepted after that deadline Finalists will be interviewed in February and the winner will be notified by phone and or letter The recipient of the fellowship will receive a 20 000 stipend The stipend supports the fellow s travel and maintenance costs The award winner will work with the Director of OACS to plan the year of travel and learning The fellow must visit at least three continents during the year of travel The fellow must communicate monthly with the project s faculty advisor and the Director of OACS while abroad Application Procedures Each applicant must submit the following A completed Application Form A resume which includes extra curricular activities honors and work experience You may include information on pertinent activities prior to your enrollment at Vanderbilt but you should concentrate on the activities of your college years A plan of study travel work including a title for your proposal This statement should be approximately 1 000 words in length You should indicate your proposed international project with particular emphasis on how the year abroad will enhance your understanding of the chosen subject in a global context Keep in mind that the fellowship seeks to promote reflection on community engagement leadership development and a global orientation not pursuit of a graduate or professional degree or a specific career Two letters of recommendation One should be from a Vanderbilt professor who will serve as an advisor to the project and the other from someone faculty administration or outside Vanderbilt who knows your contributions to an extra curricular activity The letters should be mailed directly to the Vanderbilt Traveling Fellowship Program Office of Active Citizenship and Service

    is from Atlanta GA graduated in December 2012 from the College of Arts and Science with a major in Molecular and Cellular Biology She is spending this spring semester working on a scarlet macaw reintroduction project in Chiapas Mexico Internships and volunteering in wildlife rehabilitation and ecology evolution research have made her curious about how successful conservation projects take flight from initial assessment of an environmental issue to investigating solutions ecosystemic and species management sustainable development work and political action I feel like a knight setting out on a quest To be able to witness the richness of life across the globe and learn how many top tier conservation projects run is an idyllic opportunity that I could never have dreamed of I can t thank the selection committee enough for making the impossible possible for me said Emma The perception that wildlife and human interests are antagonistic particularly in the developing world is both mistaken and pervasive I hope my journey illuminates how our relationship with the natural world can and should be symbiotic In her project entitled Seeking Samma Ajiva when life nurtures life Steigerwald plans to visit biodiversity hotspots across six continents She will intern with NGOs and grassroots movements learn peoples opinion of the conservation project in their community and document her journey through blogged reflections watercolor and photography The opportunity for a year s practical experience appreciating first hand the incredible diversity both of nature and of local ecological issues will give me an invaluable opportunity to understand man s relationship to nature at a global level said Steigerwald Perhaps across these many successful conservation sites I will be able to extract universal commonalities Perhaps I will just gain a greater appreciation for the incredibly diversity of challenges and solutions Students must apply for the
