    Direct Subsidized and or Unsubsidized Loan A Federal Direct Subsidized Loan is awarded on the basis of federal eligibility If you are eligible for such a loan the government will pay subsidize the interest on your loan while you are enrolled in school on at least a half time basis Depending on your federal eligibility you may borrow a Federal Direct Subsidized Loan in an amount up to the annual loan borrowing limit for your level of study see below You may receive a Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loan in addition to the Federal Direct Subsidized Loan or if you don t have demonstrated federal eligibility Unlike a Federal Direct Subsidized loan you are responsible for the interest from the time the unsubsidized loan is disbursed until it s repaid in full You can choose to pay the interest or allow it to accrue accumulate and be capitalized that is added to the principal amount of your loan Capitalizing the interest will obviously increase the amount you will have to repay over the life of the loan You can receive both a Federal Direct Subsidized and Unsubsidized Loan for the same enrollment period as long as the combined amount of the two loans doesn t exceed the annual loan limit as delineated below Borrowing limits applicable to eligible dependent undergraduate students As a first year student you can borrow up to 5 500 in combined Subsidized and Unsubsidized Loans with a maximum of 3 500 being in the form of a Subsidized Loan providing that you are eligible for Subsidized Loan assistance As a second year student you can borrow up to 6 500 in combined Subsidized and Unsubsidized Loans with a maximum of 4 500 being in the form of a Subsidized Loan providing that you are eligible for Subsidized Loan assistance As a third fourth or fifth year student you can borrow up to 7 500 in combined Subsidized and Unsubsidized Loans with a maximum of 5 500 being in the form of a Subsidized Loan providing that you are eligible for Subsidized Loan assistance The annual borrowing limits can be increased for students who meet the criteria to be considered independent for student financial aid purposes or whose parents have applied for and who were denied a Federal Direct PLUS Loan see Federal Direct PLUS Loan information below What is the interest rate and what fees are charged for these loans Effective July 1 2015 the interest rate for Federal Direct Subsidized Unsubsidized Loans Undergraduates is fixed at 4 29 For Federal Direct Subsidized and Unsubsidized Loans there is an origination fee of 1 073 of the loan amount that will be deducted proportionately at each disbursement When do I begin repaying the loan Repayment of Federal Direct Loans plus any accumulated interest begins six months called the grace period after you drop below half time enrollment status normally this occurs when you graduate or if you leave school for some other reason Return to top of page

    in default or owe a refund to any federal aid program To be eligible to receive a Federal Direct PLUS Loan the parent borrower generally will be required to pass a credit check If they do not pass the credit check they might still be able to receive a loan if someone such as a relative or friend who is able to pass the credit check agrees to endorse the loan promising to repay it if the borrower should fail to do so The online endorser process is preferred and it can be completed at www studentloans gov The Department of Education requires PLUS Counseling if you have adverse credit history and obtained an endorser or submitted an appeal The online PLUS Counseling can also be completed at www studentloans gov To initiate the application process please proceed to the Department of Education s website www studentloans gov to complete the Federal Direct PLUS Loan Master Promissory Note and the PLUS Request Process The Direct PLUS Loan application is a two step process You will need your FSA ID to login to the website If you are a continuing Federal Direct PLUS borrower and you did not use an endorser then you will not need to complete another Master Promissory Note You will only need to complete the PLUS Request Process at www studentloans gov INTEREST RATES AND FEES Effective July 1 2015 the interest rate is fixed at 6 84 There is an origination fee of 4 292 of the loan amount that will be deducted proportionately at each disbursement ANNUAL LOAN LIMITS The yearly limit on a Federal Direct PLUS Loan is equal to your cost of attendance minus any other financial aid you the student receive If your cost of attendance is 54 000 for example and

    then only to the extent needed We encourage that serious and deliberate consideration be given to making any borrowing decision We recommend that you examine all other options including the federal student loans before pursuing private loan options as these loans may be more expensive than other options The interest rates listed for private loans are either variable or fixed and monthly payments are extended over several years Private loans are credit based and may require a cosigner If you are not enrolled at least half time you would not be eligible for federal loans and a private loan may be a viable funding option for you Federal regulations require the completion of a Private Education Loan Applicant Self Certification form for all private education loans Most lenders will prompt you to complete this form as part of your online application process The private loan application and disbursement process cannot be completed until the signed Private Education Loan Applicant Self Certification form has been received by the lender If your lender does not provide the form then you may obtain the Private Education Loan Applicant Self Certification form from the Loan Area of the Office of Student Financial Aid and Scholarships We will assist you in completing the required form Vanderbilt University provides a historical list FASTChoice FASTChoice is a tool for comparing a historical list of private loan lenders through which our students have borrowed during the past three award years The lenders are listed in random order and the information provided is accurate to the best of our knowledge Before viewing the private lender list you will be prompted to complete the Borrowing Essentials section an interactive overview of basic borrowing information If you return to the private lender list at a later time then you can choose
