    a leader doesn t have to be ambiguous Many people take initiative without thinking about it without being in a position of designated leadership without being asked So I m writing this simply to say kudos to those of you who haven t recognized the leader in yourself Here s to those of you who are The one to say let s go do something fun when a friend is in a bad mood The one who takes care of the group when they ve had a little too much fun The friend who chooses the song to sing at Lonnie s The peer who is never afraid to share her views in class and break the awkward silence The people who are brave enough to put your mat down in the front of yoga class The person who always collects all the menus to hand back to the server The student who doesn t hesitate to take the lead in group work The roommate who always takes out the trash and recycling In any other way an everyday leader It might seem silly to call these things leadership but I think it s actually important to recognize each other for the small stuff Our days would be pretty different if no one took the lead in these ways Think of it this way we re all practicing for the day when the choice between stepping up to the plate or hanging back and giving the responsibility to someone else will really matter Written by VSLT member Emma Kissane Emma Kissane is a Special Education major from Athens GA She is a transfer student from Wellesley College where she was on the Track Field team Energy Environmental Defense Club and a student admissions representative Before coming to Vanderbilt Emma was

    skills but leadership goes so much beyond that Leadership isn t just organizing events making decisions and delegating tasks Leadership also means service to others and sharing experiences with context to Vanderbilt leadership means ensuring the vibrancy of the student body and the stimulating growth of incoming leaders I ve seen this explicitly through my time as a VUceptor and especially in my role as a True Life actor for the past two years Through True Life I have been able to share common Vanderbilt experiences with the first year class and help them think about critical issues our community faces in hopes that they can foster a healthier campus and student body I ve directly seen the impact of being a True Life actor on my own VUceptees as many of them have confided that the presentation helped them connect to the resources they needed to cope with issues they had been facing My experience being an actor showed me that leadership can come in so many forms and one of them is the mentorship that VUcept True Life offers to students To anyone looking for leadership opportunities through organizations recognize that being a leader can even mean simply

    students identify meaningful opportunities for engagement and serve the needs of campus partners Lori also highly values her role as an advisor to Dance Marathon Vanderbilt s largest philanthropic organization She is currently pursuing her M Ed in higher education administration from Vanderbilt s Peabody College and her proudest accomplishment is making the Brookie a staple of the Vanderbilt experience through her love of desserts lori t murphy vanderbilt edu Sarratt 207 615 875 2532 Clay McCullough Graduate Assistant Clay McCullough is currently a second year graduate student in the Higher Education Administration program at Vanderbilt University concentrating in Student Affairs Originally from Hendersonville Tennessee right outside of Nashville Clay considers himself to be a Nashville native He graduated from Belmont University in May of 2014 with a Bachelors of Business Administration in Management During his undergraduate years Clay was involved in orientation programs student government Greek life and interned in the Office of Student Engagement and Leadership Development Through his student leadership positions he realized his passion for higher education and specifically his interest in developing support and resources for first year students Clay values the importance of a co curricular education and enjoys finding creative ways to enhance the overall collegiate experience clay mccullough vanderbilt edu Sarratt 333 Julia Collins Undergraduate Student Staff Julia Collins is a junior at Vanderbilt University majoring in Engineering Science with two minors in engineering management and psychology On campus Julia is involved in Vanderbilt s Navy Reserve Officer Training Corps NROTC Upon graduation Julia will also commission into the Navy as an officer During her sophomore year she was given the opportunity to plan an event for NROTC which included a full day of executing drill serving food and awarding trophies for twelve schools from Tennessee and surrounding states It was during planning this event that she discovered her passion for organizing events and planning details so she decided to pursue the undergraduate position at the Office of Student Organizations and Anchor Link as a way to continue to develop her interest and knowledge in the subjects Julia was born and raised in West Palm Beach Florida where she got her commercial helicopter pilot s license As a result she can almost always be found flying at the airport relaxing on the beach or playing tennis julia k collins vanderbilt edu Sarratt 339 Ariana Fowler Undergraduate Student Staff Ariana Fowler is a junior at Vanderbilt hailing from the suburbs of Dallas Texas She is double majoring in Human Organizational Development and Medicine Health Society with a focus in International Leadership Development as well as Global Health Her current involvements on campus include being Co Chair of the Vanderbilt Speakers Committee being a student VUceptor as well as being a member of Reformed University Fellowship and several other campus organizations Ariana decided to join the team within the Office of Student Organizations and AnchorLink after having been involved in countless groups on campus Her first year at Vandy she was house president and
