    for duration of status corresponding to the I 20 date of program completion Top number is your Admission Number F 1 Visa The student visa which is a stamp or sticker placed in the passport at the American embassy or consulate permits you to enter the U S The expiration date on the visa is the last day you can use it to enter the U S Once you enter the U S the date does not matter The visa may expire while you are in the U S You cannot and need not renew it while you are here If the original visa expires a new entry visa is required for subsequent reentries to the U S following travel abroad Maintaining Status ALWAYS Maintain valid passport for you and your dependents Attend the school whose name appears on the I 20 Register full time Do not drop below full time without advanced authorization by your International Student Adviser Maintain valid I 20 Apply for extensions at least one month before your I 20 expiration date Consult your International Student Adviser in order to initiate an academic transfer Obtain a I 20 travel signature from your International Student Adviser before you depart the U S for you and your dependents Maintain health insurance that meets Vanderbilt requirements for you and your dependents Notify ISSS within 10 days of a change of address or telephone number Do one of the following within 60 days after program completion Apply for OPT Depart the U S Transfer and obtain an new I 20 for a new school program and enroll Change to another immigration status Depart the country within 15 days after academic withdrawal NOTE As an international student you must submit U S tax forms each year whether or not you receive any U S income NEVER Work off campus without authorization from your International Student Adviser Work on campus more than 20 hours per week while school is in session Take leave of absence without authorization from your International Student Adviser Drop below full time without authorization from your International Student Adviser Accept an I 20 signature or advice from anyone other than ISSS staff Full Time Enrollment Requirement Regulations require all undergraduate students to enroll for at least 12 credit hours per semester and graduate students must enroll for at least 9 credit hours per semester Graduate students whom have completed all their coursework need only to enroll in the zero credit research only course which is considered full time International Student Hold What does the hold mean This means that you will not be able to drop below a full course of study without permission from ISSS What is the purpose of this hold The purpose of the hold is to prevent you from dropping below full time and unknowingly putting your immigration status in jeopardy Remember as an international student you are required by immigration to maintain a full course of study each semester What if I want

    2019 Extension Form Dependents Departure Form Document Mailing Options Transfer Out Procedures Translation Services Travel Tips for Applying for a Visa U S Immigration Agencies and Information U S Immigration Scams Report Immigration Scams Living and Working in the U S Annual Tax Filing International Tax Topics and Links FICA Tax Exemptions Tax Treaties English Conversation Sessions Finding a Job Housing Legal Resources Immigration Attorneys Marriage and Divorce Phone Service Transportation and Driving Social Security Number SSN Storage Facilities Where to go for Health Care Home Immigration F 1 Students Employment Employment Curricular Practical Training Optional Practical Training Severe Economic Hardship Interview Tips On Campus Employment F 1 students are eligible for on campus employment which is limited to no more than 20 hours per week while classes are in session and full time more than 20 hours week ONLY during official school breaks winter break spring break summer vacation There are a few resources for Vanderbilt students to find on campus employment Hire A Dore is a database for Vanderbilt related job opportunities PLEASE NOTE HIRE A DORE ALSO INCLUDES POSITIONS THAT ARE OFF CAMPUS F 1 students are not legally allowed to accept these jobs without employment authorization They are generally classified as other but be mindful when searching for employment on this site Additionally if you have trouble logging in to Hire A Dore on your first attempt contact Student Employment and they will be able to help you Student Employment is another resource for helping Vanderbilt students find work Their office is located at 2309 West End Avenue Nashville TN 37203 the phone number is 615 343 4562 Volunteering To volunteer the position must be a legitimate advertised volunteer position and cannot receive any compensation including financial Differences Between CPT and OPT H 1B Overview The H 1B visa is an employer sponsored visa To obtain an H 1B you must have a job offer and an employer who is willing to sponsor your H 1B application The H 1B visa is employer and position specific An individual may work in H 1B status for a maximum of 6 years However a petition will not be approved for more than 3 years at one time Legal Q A Are employers required to interview international students Employers are not required to interview an international student who has an F 1 or J 1 visa even if the student is otherwise qualified for the job Some employers may have set policies stating that they will not sponsor and therefore will not interview F 1 and J 1 students even though those students may have Optional Practical Training for F 1s or academic training for J 1s allowing them to work temporarily after graduation This type of policy is lawful and an employer can freely state that it will not interview or sponsor students in F 1 or J 1 status Can employers limit their interviewing hiring to U S citizens Although employers can refuse to interview or hire
