    the Seiziémistes of the Mid Atlantic December 11 12 2015 Andrea Frisch Associate Professor University of Maryland Andrea Frisch Associate Professor University of Maryland Andrea Frisch s research has focused on the literature of cultural encounter in fifteenth and sixteenth century Europe and on the impact of the Wars of Religion on the literature of sixteenth and seventeenth century France Her most recent book Forgetting Differences Tragedy Historiography and the French Wars of Religion Edinburgh UP 2015 is a study of the role of the tragic in the rhetoric of reconciliation in the wake of France s civil wars By juxtaposing representations of the French civil war past as they appear and frequently overlap in historiography and tragedy from 1550 1630 the book tracks changes in the ways in which history and tragedy sought to move readers throughout the period of the wars and in their wake Andrea has received fellowships from the Newberry Library the Folger Shakespeare Library the National Endowment for the Humanities the National Humanities Center and the Center for Advanced Studies at the Ludwig Maximilians Universität in Munich Her work has appeared in a variety of scholarly journals including Representations Modern Language Quarterly Montaigne Studies Romanic Review Discourse and Esprit créateur as well as in edited volumes on Rabelais Foucault and Agrippa d Aubigné Bruce Hayes Associate Professor University of Kansas Bruce Hayes Associate Professor University of Kansas Bruce Hayes is an associate professor of French literature and culture at the University of Kansas where he has taught since 2001 He specializes in late medieval and Renaissance literature and culture with a particular focus in popular culture and humor His current book length project Castigating Comedy Polemical Humor before and during the French Wars of Religion explores both regionally Nérac in southern France Rouen Geneva and
