  • Virginia Military Institute - Keydet Club Hosts 2015 Scholarship Awards Banquet
    teams Following the recognition of the scholarship donors and fund representatives the KeydetClub then awarded the prestigious Three Legged Stool Award given to thescholarship athlete who best exemplifies the three legs of the VMI proverbialstool highest in Academics Leadership and Athletics The idea of the VMI three legged stool was coined by the late Giles Miller 24 one of VMI s most legendary alumni indescribing VMI s well rounded educational mission This year s award went to Cadet David Geary 16 who currently wears Academic Stars as an Applied Mathematics Major servesas the President of the VMI Honor Court and is a captain of the VMI baseballteam See accompanying article for more on Cadet Geary 16 This Parent s Weekend banquet tradition has become the most important annual eventfor the Keydet Club It is so encouraging to bring together all of ourscholarship cadet athletes and many of the generous donors and FundRepresentatives who make their educations possible said Keydet Club CEO GregCavallaro 84 Allowing our cadet athletes an opportunity to interact with VMI benefactors and to be inspired challenged and motivated by outstanding guest speakers gives them aglimpse of what their futures could hold As meaningful as the dinner is for our cadet athletes it is also encouraging to hear from so many of those who generously support VMI athletics as to how inspired they are after having spent such a meaningful and engagingevening with their cadet athlete and parents concluded Cavallaro Wes Foster 56 had this to say about the event We were very impressed with theKeydet Club s Scholarship Awards Banquet It was so nice to meet thecadets on our scholarships and see how much it means to their parents Iwas only able to attend VMI and walk on to the Football Team because of 3 or 4alumni

    David Geary 16 with His Family CadetDavid Geary VMI Class of 2016 was presented with the VMI Keydet Club sThree Legged Stool Award at its 2015 Scholarship Athletes Recognition Banqueton October 17 2015 The award recognizes a First Class scholarship athlete whohas the highest achievements in academics leadership and athletics Gearymatriculated at VMI from Benedictine High School in Richmond VA He is anApplied Mathematics Major Honor Court President and leader on VMI s Division Ibaseball team Overthe years Geary has proved to be a valuable utility player on the baseballteams given his ability to play numerous positions including first and thirdbases Cadet Geary is a consistent and reliable fixture in the middle of theKeydet s line up as left handed batter and as a three year starter will be ateam captain this year Not only is Cadet Geary a leader on thebaseball field he is also serving in his second year as a member of the VMIHonor Court and has one of the biggest leadership responsibilities in theClass of 2016 as President of this year s Honor Court While Geary leads in athletics andleadership his accomplishments in the classroom are also inspiring As anApplied Mathematics Major he has been on the Dean s List every semester of hiscadetship He proudly wears Academic Stars for this achievement and boasts aGPA well exceeding 3 5 Whenasked about Geary Head Baseball Coach Jonathan Hadra 04 said Ican t say enough positive things about David He brings such a positiveattitude and energy to the field every day that lifts his teammates and coachesup He is a great representation of what the complete VMI experience isall about PastCadet Recipients JohnD Simmons 02 Soccer 2001 MichaelN Lokale 03 Track 2002 MatthewD Sharpe 04 Football 2003 TyE Denby 05 Track 2004 ChristopherJ Brandriff 06 Track 2005 MichaelD

    Spirit of VMI Award Don Heslep 56 matriculated to VMI from Fairfield Virginiaand earned a B S degree in Civil Engineering from VMI and was commissioned asan Armor Officer in the United States Army from 1956 1958 In 1959 he began what would be a 4 year stintwith DuPont Construction leading to a 23 year career owning his own business Donald B Heslep Incorporated a large custom home builder and lightcommercial builder in Richmond Virginia From 1989 to the present Mr Heslepdeveloped and built OASIS SPORT PARK and he developed built and managed officewarehouse complexes and storage facilities throughout Richmond Don has been steady and visible in his support for VMI scadet athletes and coaches over the course of his nearly 60 years as an alumnusof VMI and member of The Keydet Club In 2014 Don completed a second six yearterm as a member of the Keydet Club s Board of Governors and has been agenerous Leadership Member in both the Keydet Club and Foundation s InstituteSociety going back to the late 70 s In making the presentation of the award to Mr Heslep KeydetClub CEO Greg Cavallaro 84 said The 1956 VMI Yearbook known as The Bomb had this to say about Don Heslep and I quote A very substantial cadet Hisclassmates know this gentlemanly son of Virginia s beautiful and historic valleyas a quiet and dependable country boy who is destined to reflect great crediton his Alma Mater Well Don Heslep did not let his Alma Mater down In fact it should be known that in May of2014 Don Heslep and his wife Jo gave the VMI Keydet Club its first outrightcash gift ever of 1 million The first EVER His leadership inspired many others to step up at this critical juncturein support of VMI athletics which lead
