  • New Market Ceremony
    Market Ceremony Annual Ceremony Honors New Market Cadets Formal ceremonies honoring the cadets who fought in the Battle of New Market have taken place on the VMI post every year since 1878 The ceremony was first held at the New Market monument Virginia Mourning Her Dead in its current location in front of Nichols Hall in 1912 In that year five of the cadets who died as a result of the battle were reburied beneath the monument A sixth was reburied there in 1960 The ceremony remembers not only the New Market cadets but all alumni who have died serving our nation It begins with the Corps of Cadets marching out of barracks to the Parade Ground and forming up with its two battalions centered on the monument Next in the historic roll call cadet company commanders call out the names of the 10 cadets who died as a result of the battle In response an appointed cadet gives the traditional reply Died on the field of honor A wreath is then placed at the base of Virginia Mourning Her Dead followed by the reading of the New Market Prayer by the Institute chaplain and seven cadets firing three rifle

  • Virginia Military Institute - National Civil War Award
    Trust which promotes preservation and interpretation of Civil War sites throughout the country The Site of the Year Award given annually to one of some 500 Civil War Discovery Trail sites in 28 states recognizes the Park s extraordinary dedication to protecting America s Civil War heritage The Park was also commended for its work in heritage tourism in the Shenandoah Valley as well as its participation in the Trust s annual Park Day battlefield cleanup event and an economic impact study conducted in 2003 2004 This award is a validation of the hard work by the Park s dedicated staff and volunteers said New Market Battlefield Director Scott H Harris It also reaffirms our mission of preservation and education aimed at sharing the stories of the Battle of New Market the Bushong family and the rich heritage of the Shenandoah Valley with people everywhere Complimenting the Trust award results from visitor surveys collected in 2004 give the Park a 94 approval rating among tourists from more than 30 states and five foreign countries Nine out of ten visitors said that their Park experience exceeded expectations Educational tour groups which are surveyed separately gave the Park a 100 satisfaction rating in 2004 Total attendance for 2004 was 52 000 the highest since 1989 The survey also provided insight into the economic impact of Park visitors on the New Market area economy and the Park s role in Shenandoah Valley Tourism Over 42 said they planned to shop in New Market and 50 planned to dine in a local restaurant Among visitors staying overnight 18 listed hotels in New Market or nearby areas Seventeen percent stayed at Massanutten Resort which offers seasonal weekly bus excursions to the battlefield A large number of survey respondents 79 planned to visit other Shenandoah Valley

    and day Become a Volunteer The New Market Battlefield State Historical Park is dedicated to perpetuating the battle site as a memorial to the valor of the VMI cadets in the Battle of New Market and to preserving and interpreting the military and social history of the Shenandoah Valley from 1858 to 1868 It takes many people to accomplish this mission including a dedicated team of volunteers who work in many areas including but certainly not limited to costumed interpretation special event support guided tours Park upkeep and preservation and educational programming As a new volunteer I have found the staff and other volunteers at New Market Battlefield welcoming and helpful My first activities were both fun and personally rewarding I look forward to being more involved in future programs Having moved here from GA I was ready to learn about Civil War Virginia and becoming a volunteer at the battlefield has helped me tremendously History comes alive for me at the park Being a volunteer is a wonderful way to share your love of history historical interpretation with a super group of people dedicated to educating the public History is not a dead bore it s alive and fun for the whole family Volunteer Application Who is eligible Volunteer positions are open to all individuals who meet the qualifications outlined below without regard to race color religion gender national origin age or disability What are the qualities of a Volunteer Dedication to the Park s mission and values of the Volunteer Corps Integrity to represent the Park and uphold the legacy entrusted to us Open mindedness and patience to interact with visitors whose view of the Civil War may differ from your own Reliability fulfill your volunteer commitment What are the benefits Annual volunteer recognition event 20 discount on
