    Technology Faculty Staff Resources Parent Cadet Resources Policies Procedures Threat Assessment Team ROTC Lt Col Sarah Jones Director of Disabilities Services P 540 464 7667 F 540 464 7025 448 Institute Hill Lexington VA 24450 8 00 am 4 30 pm Monday Friday Mission of the Office of Disabilities Services The Office of Disabilities Services ODS is committed to meeting ethical and legal responsibilities to ensure equitable educational access to cadets with documented disabilities We support the academic success personal growth and development of life and leadership skills for cadets in a manner that promotes self awareness self determination and self advocacy ODS also serves as a resource to the VMI community to encourage awareness and understanding regarding disabilities issues in higher education Cadets with documented disabilities are encouraged to schedule a meeting with the Director of ODS as early as possible to allow adequate time for review of documentation to allow for a thorough assessment of academic needs and to familiarize new cadets with administrative procedures Goals Establish clearly defined policies and procedures to address the responsibilities of cadets as well as the Institute Based on review and evaluation of documentation presented by cadets facilitate the provision of reasonable academic accommodations that remove barriers to learning and demonstrating knowledge without altering fundamental components of a course or program Assist cadets in acquiring and using technology that helps compensate for disabilities that impact language processing Educate cadets so they can make informed choices about their rights and responsibilities Refer cadets to appropriate resources Promote awareness and understanding of cadets with disabilities in the Corps and the VMI community Provide information regarding program services to the VMI community as well as prospective cadets Conduct assessment to support continuous improvement of programs and services Receiving Academic Accommodations in College The legislation governing

    Advising The mission of the Institute Academic Advising Program is to guide cadets through the exploration and clarification of their academic career and life goals to help them develop skills and strategies that will contribute to their academic success and enable them to achieve a balanced engagement in co curricular and academic activities Faculty advisors both support and challenge cadets in an effort to increase each cadet s confidence and self sufficiency until graduation Upon entry into VMI each cadet is assigned a faculty advisor who unless the cadet subsequently changes academic major will work with the cadet until graduation During the first year there is extensive contact between the advisor and cadet in order to facilitate the cadet s transition into the VMI culture assist the cadet in mastering the academic policies and regulations and assist the cadet in coordinating the demands of a multi faceted academic and co curricular experience As cadets advance through their cadetship they are expected to assume increased responsibility for complying with academic standards and regulations initiating the use of support services and making good decisions about the integration of the academic and co curricular activities The academic advising program is a pivotal element of the broader program of academic support services provided by the Virginia Military Institute and a major force in ensuring a successful progression through the VMI program Cadets are encouraged to take full advantage of the Institute s commitment to the academic advising process VMI Academic Advising Insight for Incoming Cadets Vision The Academic Advising Program at VMI aspires to produce cadets who are committed to pursuing their intellectual goals and who are actively engaged in the process of achieving those goals It aspires to produce cadets who are actively engaged in planning implementing and completing their academic careers with
