    540 464 7228 Fax 540 464 7279 Preston Library Virginia Military Institute 345 Letcher Avenue Lexington VA 24450 Contact Preston Library About Preston Library The mission of Preston Library is to provide library materials and services of the highest quality to teach skills needed for academic inquiry and lifelong learning to support faculty and undergraduate research to provide access to and promote the use of Institute historical materials to support the creation and use of multimedia by cadets and faculty and to offer library services to the community at large Named for Colonel J T L Preston the library was dedicated in 1939 enlarged in 1972 and renovated in 1996 The building is equipped with 32 public access networked computers for research use and a computer instruction lab which enables librarians to offer hands on training for our numerous online resources Preston Library also has 110 individual study carrels that are available on a first come first serve basis Carrels are equipped with study lamps power outlets and network connections There are six group study rooms available on the 6th floor in addition to many large tables for study and research Each floor also has a gallery area furnished with comfortable armchairs and sofas All areas of the library have wireless access In addition the library maintains a music collection with music players and comfortable seating in the Timmins Music Room Preston Library s collections include over 300 000 volumes of print materials over 5000 non print items and more than 300 scientific literary and general interest print periodicals The Library installed an integrated library system in 1991 and upgraded its system in 2004 The online catalog is available at library vmi edu In addition the library provides access to more than 100 full text and citation databases and over

    Find Articles Get Help Services Departments About Preston Library Preston Library Staff Erika Brooke Administrative Assistant Ph 540 464 7228 Fax 540 464 7279 Preston Library Virginia Military Institute 345 Letcher Avenue Lexington VA 24450 Contact Preston Library Wi Fi Access Wi Fi access is available in nearly all of Preston Library Because of the structure of the building there are a few places within the library with a weak or non existent signal The access points and networks are provided for patrons with VMI network accounts as well as guests A brief description of the available networks follows VMI Sentinel VMI Sentinel is the preferred network for patrons with VMI network accounts because it provides access to the Internet access to network shares mapped drives wireless printing a VMI IP address which allows easy access to the library s electronic resources Anyone with a VMI network account is strongly encouraged to use the VMI Sentinel network In order to use the VMI Sentinel network you must install set up the wireless network prior to connecting to it for the first time rather than simply clicking on VMI Sentinel from the list of available networks This does not apply to Mac OS X Connecting to VMI Wireless VMI Secure The VMI Secure network will be deactivated soon and is being replaced by VMI Sentinel Preston Public Preston Public is the preferred network for anyone who needs Wi Fi access but does not have a VMI network account The Preston Public wireless network is a public unsecured network that allows access to the Internet and wireless printing Electronic library resources are available only if you use the proxy server which requires a VMI account VMI Guest The VMI Guest wireless network may appear to be available in the library due to

    Genealogy Alumni Manuscripts Civil War New Market Give Close Menu Library Home Find Books Find Articles Get Help Services Departments About Preston Library Preston Library Staff Erika Brooke Administrative Assistant Ph 540 464 7228 Fax 540 464 7279 Preston Library Virginia Military Institute 345 Letcher Avenue Lexington VA 24450 Contact Preston Library Wireless Printing in Preston Library VMI Cadets and faculty should connect to the VMI Sentinel network Patrons who do not have VMI network credentials should connect to the Preston Public network Here is more information about wireless networks at VMI Download and activate the client installation software This process varies by computer type operating system and browser It could take some time but it only has to be done ONCE Open a browser Internet Explorer Firefox Chrome or Safari and go to print vmi edu Please note Edge does not work at this time Click on the yellow button to the upper right Install Client Depending on your settings the client installation program may download to your computer rather than install If this is the case then open the folder where it downloaded and run the installer program from there The client installation program may be downloaded but not activated Use the Help buttons for assistance A dialog box asking if you want to install may be hidden by another window Be sure to select trust or proceed if you are asked to trust not trust After client installation close the browser and reopen before the next step Install any printer in the library by floor Go back to print vmi edu Select Preston Library and then the floor at Preston Library from which you wish to print A map of that floor showing all printers will appear Hover over the printer you would like to install and
