  • Virginia Military Institute - About the VMI Foundation
    Family for the sole purpose of advancing the Virginia Military Institute Operating as a private non profit corporation since 1937 the VMI Foundation annually raises tens of millions of dollars in gifts and commitments from VMI s alumni parents and friends as well as manages hundreds of millions of dollars in endowments With this private money the VMI Foundation supports the constant improvement of the Institute s academic and co curricular programs It also supports capital improvements on Post that ensure that VMI has the high quality facilities necessary to provide a modern education and a healthful environment in which the Corps of Cadets live learn and compete Also immediate gifts from donors and endowments that the VMI Foundation manages annually generate millions of dollars in financial aid In the current academic year private financial support constitutes one quarter of VMI s 84 5 million operating budget and the vast majority of this comes from the VMI Foundation This money ensures that VMI can offer the combination of rigorous academics a demanding co curriculum and plentiful athletic opportunities that constitute its extraordinary education As a private entity the VMI Foundation also provides an indirect financial benefit to the Institute by removing from it the financial burden of managing and staffing its own development office The VMI Foundation also funds the vital work of the VMI Alumni Association and cooperates with the VMI Alumni Association and the VMI Keydet Club to strengthen the bonds within the VMI Family and the ties alumni and friends have to the Institute In the last academic year therefore the VMI Foundation provided almost 28 million in direct and indirect aid to the Institute and its faculty staff and cadets About The Foundation Our Mission President s Message Message from the CEO Board of Trustees Executing

    just a few Ways to Give Unrestricted Donations Unrestricted donations Unrestricted donations may be used for any purpose by the Institute in its on going effort to ensure the high quality of its extraordinary education Alumni and friends provide these gifts through the Foundation Fund which raises unrestricted money for VMI s academic and co curricular programs or by establishing endowments to generate unrestricted funds Restricted Donations Restricted Donations Donors may choose to restrict their gifts by indicating on a check or a reply card or in other correspondence a specific purpose for the gift In this case the gift s designation is confirmed on receipt Annual Giving Annual Giving Through the Foundation Fund the Keydet Club Scholarship Fund and the Athletic Operations Fund annual giving raises unrestricted money for academic and co curricular programs grant in aid assistance for cadet athletes and operation of intercollegiate athletic programs Annual gifts are deposited into one of many accounts and distributed annually Endowments Endowments Restricted and unrestricted endowments on the other hand constitute a permanent gift that over time will provide increasing support for VMI through dividends When endowments are restricted VMI Foundation gift officers work with the donors to ensure the dividends are directed where the donors wish The VMI Foundation invests endowed gifts unrestricted and restricted for one full fiscal year before disbursing any funds The principal is never spent and provides a continual source of financial support for VMI The VMI Foundation sends donors an annual statement showing the status of the funds and if applicable who is receiving support Endowments are permanent funds that support scholarships for cadets provide money for Institute professorships generate money for academic departments and other activities and produce unrestricted funds for VMI It takes a minimum of 25 000 to endow an unrestricted
