    Library Home Find Books Departments Media Equipment Technical Services Visitor Information Archives Archives Home Online Exhibits VMI History FAQs Genealogy Alumni Manuscripts Civil War New Market Give Close Menu May Graduation Institute Awards Commissioning New Market Ceremony Graduation 2016 Ceremony FAQs Media Resources Parking Info December Graduation Area Accommodations Katrina Butner Office Manager or Col Gary Bissell Deputy Chief of Staff and Operations P 540 464 7104 F 540 464 7660 201 Smith Hall Virginia Military Institute Lexington VA 24450 Email the Office New Market Ceremony and Parade Due to the unique nature of this event seating and viewing areas are limited mainly along the Academic Row side of Letcher Avenue There will be no parking or vehicle traffic allowed on Letcher Avenue during this time frame The annual New Market Ceremony and Review commemorates the bravery and sacrifice of the Cadets called to the battle at New Market in 1864 forty seven wounded and ten who died on the field of honor and to all of the Institute s alumni who have served our nation The ceremony and parade is held on Post at VMI Order of the Ceremony The Ceremonial Formation The Corps of Cadets will march from Barracks to the parade ground forming two battalions centered on Virginia Mourning Her Dead the monument given to the Institute in memory of the New Market Cadets The Roll Call The ceremony begins with the historic roll call of the ten cadets who died in the Battle each name called by the Commander of the Company in which the New Market Cadet served In response to each name called a cadet appointed for the ceremony gives the traditional reply Died on the field of honor The Regimental Commander then gives the full report to the Commandant The Ceremony and Review

    Office of the Chief of Staff These tickets will be handed out the week of 25 April through 29 April For cadets requesting additional tickets it is recommended that they first ask their Class Officers for any unused tickets This is the most effective way of identifying unused tickets and redistributing them The Class of 2016 class officers are arranging an excess ticket turn in system Additionally there will be a ticket turn in and pick up booth outside of Cameron Hall on the morning of graduation Family members who do not use all of their tickets may turn them in and those who need additional tickets may get them on a first come first served basis On the morning of graduation there will be a booth where families generally turn in extra tickets but we can not guarantee there will be availability Is Commencement open to the public Answer Commencement Ceremonies in Cameron Hall are restricted to guests of the graduating class However the simulcast viewing of the event in Marshall Hall Gillis Theater is open to the public Which events are open to the public All events are open to the public except the Superintendent s Reception and Commencement Limited seating is available for many of the events so we encourage guests to arrive early For additional information please contact the Chief of Staff s office at 540 464 7104 Handicapped seating and access Answer Handicapped seating is available for commencement events A reserved area for persons with a walking disability or those using a wheelchair is available Due to the large number attending and the limited space seating is available for the person who needs the special seating and one accompanying guest or attendant No individuals will be permitted down in the specialized seating area in Cameron

    Media Resources Parking Info December Graduation Area Accommodations Katrina Butner Office Manager or Col Gary Bissell Deputy Chief of Staff and Operations P 540 464 7104 F 540 464 7660 201 Smith Hall Virginia Military Institute Lexington VA 24450 Email the Office Parking Information Parking will be on the Parade Ground for many events during Commencement Week weather permitting Signage will indicate when it is open Parking spaces may be found in the parking lots on Post behind academic buildings New Market Ceremony and Parade Parking will not be permitted on Letcher Avenue on either sides of the road along the Parade Ground Commencement Parking will be allowed on the Parade Ground weather permitting for all activities Please pay attention to the traffic pattern for the departure of cadets after Commencement The area in front of Barracks will be congested with all of the cadets trying to depart at the same time Vehicles should remain parked on the Parade Ground when possible and the cadet s belongings carried to the vehicle The VMI Police need your assistance and patience to ensure that the cadet departure is accomplished in the quickest and safest manner possible Inclement Weather Parking If heavy rain makes parking on the Parade Ground impractical the following parking options are available Satellite parking will be available in the Lowe s lower parking lot next to WalMart a shuttle service will be provided from the parking lot to Cameron Hall Additional parking may be found throughout post in permanent parking areas On Post At VMI Parking is available on a first come first served basis Once on Post parking is filled you are asked to proceed to the off Post parking locations described below and use the shuttle services provided Parking in Walking Distance Other City Parking On weekends
