    His work experience is very diverse Some of his responsibilities have ranged from sanitation worker firefighter EMT emergency medical services supervisor chief fire officer and college professor Much of his leadership and instruction is focused on outside the box concepts Steven is an experienced instructor and conference presenter He served as Instructor Chief and Training Coordinator for the MS State Fire Academy He developed and directed the delivery of many leadership and other courses for public safety personnel and private industry personnel He developed and implemented the Designated Mississippi Fire Chief program and the Designated Mississippi Chief Fire Officer program He also serves as an adjunct instructor for the United States Fire Administration U S Department of Homeland Security Emittsburg MD He has instructed leadership and other courses in twenty 20 states including Alabama Arizona Arkansas Connecticut Florida Idaho Illinois Kansas Louisiana Maine Maryland Massachusetts Mississippi Nebraska New Hampshire Ohio Oklahoma Oregon Tennessee and Texas He has also instructed students from other countries including Japan Canada England Mexico Turkey etc His educational accomplishments include Senior Executives in State and Local Government Harvard University Cambridge MA M S in Executive Fire Service Leadership Grand Canyon University Phoenix AZ B S in

    medical evacuations After active duty in the Navy he earned a J D degree from the University of South Carolina and then practiced law for 25 years His practice was a general practice with an emphasis on trial work and included 2 ½ years as an Assistant District Attorney He earned a Masters in History from The Citadel in Charleston SC and then taught part time as an adjunct history professor at the local community college He earned his Doctor of Education degree in Sport Management from the United States Sports Academy in Alabama He began his full time teaching career as the Chair of the U S Sports Academy s Sport Management program in 2000 During that time he spent 6 months as a visiting professor in the graduate program at the University of Bahrain in the Middle East While at the Sports Academy he was also the Editor of the Sport Journal and the Interim Dean of Academic Affairs Dr Bell taught Sport Management and Business Law at the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio TX from 2002 to 2004 He is an adjunct professor for the Universe Online at The University of the Incarnate Word

    Education He has a Master s of Science Degree from California State University Long Beach in Emergency Services with a specialization in Emergency Management and a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Criminal Justice from Chapman University in Orange California Biography Erik Burks first entered public service in 1986 when he joined the United States Marine Corps at 17 as a Field Radio Operator In 1992 he returned to his hometown and became a Long Beach Police Officer and later a Police Sergeant Becoming a Military Police Officer in the Marine Corps Reserve in 1997 he left municipal law enforcement in 2006 and returned to Active Duty with the Military Police as a Master Sergeant at the Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in San Diego California In October of 2009 was promoted to Master Gunnery Sergeant E 9 and was re assigned as the senior enlisted member with I MEF at Camp Pendleton California and deployed to Camp Dwyer Afghanistan as the Provost Marshal and is now back with I MEF at Camp Pendleton His previous teaching assignments were as a Police Field Training Officer and Police Academy Instructor His current assignment is the Training Chief for the Military Police His
