  • Health Issues From Winter Weather | The Warrior
    percent of the population will be impacted by the flu this year because it is easily spread through coughs contaminated surfaces and sneezing A common cold is spread similarly and more than 1 billion people have a cold each year The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that the common stomach bug the Norovirus disturbs up to 21 million people each year and is highest in the winter months Even ear infections are common and can appear quickly and are often caused from having a winter cold According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention More than 200 000 people in the United States are hospitalized from flu related complications each year including 20 000 children younger than age 5 Between 1976 and 2006 the estimated number of flu related deaths every year ranged from about 3 000 to about 49 000 In the 2013 2014 season there were in the U S 35 4 million influenza associated illnesses 14 6 medically attended flu illnesses and 314 000 flu hospitalizations Many Americans also experience Winter Blues which is attributed to Seasonal Affective Disorder SAD Some research indicates that this disorder if often based on geographic location and sun light exposure or lack thereof Symptoms for the Winter Blues includes loss of energy depression extreme fatigue increased appetite weight gain and even suicidal thoughts Millions of Americans suffer from this condition during the winter months It s not uncommon to feel blue during the winter months but should also seek treatment Recognizing medical symptoms being interested in health care options and keeping up with healthcare trends are all part of the healthcare field If you enjoy learning about health care issues and want to progress into a health care career Waldorf can offer education solutions Study Health Care Management

    while he won t deny that it takes a little practice to get use to once you understand the basics students are often surprised by how much information is practically at their fingertips Ask for Help The best advice from the librarians is to ask them for help The library is here to answer questions and provide assistance Derrick said that no two questions they receive are ever the same The most common questions they receive usually involve how to locate a specific article help with APA citations best ways to perform research and why citing is important They ve even answered questions about research locating materials broken computers and anything else that comes their way The librarians constantly work to develop guides and videos respond to emails and answer incoming chats That s right online chat New this year and the biggest addition is the Ask a Librarian tool The service has already made an immediate impact on students as they have appreciated being able to get in touch with a person and receive one on one real assistance through the online library If you are stuck on a project Ask a Librarian This feature provides assistance 24 hours a day 365 days a year The online library and librarians are committed to support students in whatever ways possible They often times go above and beyond the call of just books and articles They have tracked down missing textbooks given tours of the online library over the phone and helped students find supplemental readings They need to know that you need help in order to help so feel free to call email use the Ask a Librarian chat feature to get their attention We are very excited about all of the growth happening within Waldorf and we re doing

  • Meet the Librarian: Derrick Burton | The Warrior
    director Derrick was the reference and instruction librarian at Waldorf College He has worked in a number of libraries and archives including the Michigan Opera House As the librarian director he has a lot of different responsibilities including developing resources for the online library coordinating with faculty to make sure they are getting the appropriate support and staying in touch with students to make sure their issues are resolved Early in life Derrick was an Eagle Scout and performed community service throughout much of his youth and college career indicating that service has always been a strong part of family life He said In many ways being a librarian is an extension of that helping people and meeting the needs of the community only this time it is more closely aligned with my own hobbies Always being a fan of libraries many don t realize that you can make it a profession and career Derrick knew that in some capacity he would want to help people and realized after he completed his undergraduate degree and fell in love with libraries that he could become a librarian Librarians see books titles authors and resources consistently and read often We wanted to know what kind of books librarians read and enjoy Derrick shared with us that his current favorite book is A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara He said It is a beautiful but emotionally difficult journey about friendship life and our relationships with the world To keep students on their toes Derrick has an additional recommendation for students He suggests they pick up a copy of The Secret History by Donna Tartt He said It is a murder mystery that takes place in a quiet town at a small liberal arts college much like Waldorf Sounds a little spooky and a
