  • UW astronomer Eric Agol’s seven-planet system part of major NASA discovery | UW Today

  • Astronomers find three ‘super-Earths’ in nearby star’s habitable zone | UW Today
    one super Earth as well as tantalizing but incomplete evidence for a third Additional observations enabled Anglada Escudé s team to detect additional planet candidates bringing GJ667C s total companions to six possibly even seven worlds Because the habitable zone is so close to the star the planets years are far shorter than the Earth s between 20 and 100 days The close proximity of these planets in the habitable zone to the host star makes it likely they are tidally locked which in this case means the same hemisphere always faces the star Barnes said Fortunately we know that this state can still support life In addition to the three super Earths in the habitable zone two more orbit at its outskirts and with the right properties could also support life One of these candidates GJ667Ch the researchers write is only tentatively detected and will require further follow up for confirmation The technique the researchers used called Doppler spectroscopy does not measure a planet s actual mass but finds only its minimum mass However the only way the habitable zone can be so packed with planets is if their masses are smaller than 10 Earth masses These planets are good candidates to have a solid surface and maybe an atmosphere like the Earth s not something like Jupiter Barnes said He added that the number of potentially habitable worlds will be substantially greater if astronomers can expect to find several around each low mass star like GJ667C Instead of observing 10 stars to look for a single potentially habitable planet we now know we can look at just one star and find several of them Barnes said Doppler and other surveys show that systems with multiple super Earths may be fairly common in the cosmos and that small planets may be abundant around cool M dwarf stars The discovery provides not only a better understanding of the star in question but also a clue that these worlds may be the first members of an emerging population of M dwarf stars with multiple low mass planets in their habitable zones The Sun s neighborhood may contain many rocky planets in habitable zones Other coauthors are Mikko Tuomi and Hugh R A Jones of the University of Hertfordshire Enricho Gerlach of the University of Turku Finland René Heller of the Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics Potsdam in Germany James Jenkins of Universidad de Chile Sebastian Wende1 and Steven S Vogt of the University of California Santa Cruz Paul Butler of the Carnegie Institution and Ansgar Reiners of the University of Göttingen The National Science Foundation and NASA provided funding for the work For more information contact Barnes at 206 543 8979 or rory astro washington edu For media relations help contact Vince Stricherz at 206 543 2580 or vinces uw edu Share this Facebook Twitter Email Print Office of News Information Browse Articles Contact Us Community Photos UW Classifieds University Photography UW Experts Search UW Today Search Browse Categories Select Category Administrative

  • Astronomers: ‘Tilt-a-worlds’ could harbor life | UW Today
    Barnes So the rapid tilting of an exoplanet actually increases the likelihood that there might be liquid water on a planet s surface Barnes is second author on the paper First author is John Armstrong of Weber State who earned his doctorate at the UW Earth and its neighbor planets occupy roughly the same plane in space But there is evidence Barnes said of systems whose planets ride along at angles to each other As such they can tug on each other from above or below changing their poles direction compared to the host star The team used computer simulations to reproduce such off kilter planetary alignments wondering he said what an Earthlike planet might do if it had similar neighbors Their findings also argue against the long held view among astronomers and astrobiologists that a planet needs the stabilizing influence of a large moon as Earth has to have a chance at hosting life We re finding that planets don t have to have a stable tilt to be habitable Barnes said Minus the moon he said Earth s tilt now at a fairly stable 23 5 degrees might increase by 10 degrees or so Climates might fluctuate but life would still be possible This study suggests the presence of a large moon might inhibit life at least at the edge of the habitable zone The work was done through the UW s Virtual Planetary Laboratory an interdisciplinary research group that studies how to determine if exoplanets those outside the solar system might have the potential for life The research involved orbital dynamics planetary dynamics and climate studies It s bigger than any of those disciplines on their own Barnes said Armstrong said that expanding the habitable zone might almost double the number of potentially habitable planets in the galaxy Applying the research and its expanded habitable zone to our own celestial neighborhood for context he said It would give the ability to put Earth say past the orbit of Mars and still be habitable at least some of the time and that s a lot of real estate Barnes UW co authors are Victoria Meadows Thomas Quinn and Jonathan Breiner Shawn Domagal Goldman of NASA s Goddard Space Flight Center is also a co author The research was funded by a grant from the NASA Astrobiology Institute The work was facilitated through the use of advanced computational storage and networking infrastructure provided by the Hyak supercomputer system supported in part by the UW s eScience Institute For more information contact Barnes at 206 543 8979 or rory astro washington edu or Armstrong at 801 626 6215 or jcarmstrong weber edu Share this Facebook Twitter Email Print Tagged with planetary science Rory Barnes Virtual Planetary Laboratory Office of News Information Browse Articles Contact Us Community Photos UW Classifieds University Photography UW Experts Search UW Today Search Browse Categories Select Category Administrative Affairs Archive Arts and Entertainment Buildings and Grounds Education Engineering Environment For UW Employees Health and Medicine Honors

  • 5 effective parenting programs to reduce problem behaviors in children | UW Today
    Social Development Model which focuses on fostering opportunities skills rewards for positive social behaviors bonding and clear expectations for behavior The programs include changing known risk factors such as poor parental supervision and high family conflict and show children what normal family behavior looks like The programs also have scientific evidence showing that they work Nurse Family Partnership sends registered nurses to visit young first time single mothers at least once every two weeks during their first pregnancy and until their child is 2 years old Nurses help expecting moms reduce smoking drinking and drug use After the child is born nurses help mothers create safe environments for their children and develop strategies for dealing with difficult behaviors Positive Parenting Program is a flexible system of programs that focuses on five main goals promoting safe and engaging environments creating positive learning environments using effective discipline creating clear and reasonable expectations and self care for parents The Incredible Years teaches children ages 3 6 their parents and teachers skills and strategies for handling difficult situations Parents participate in group sessions children take part in therapist led group sessions which help children develop skills such as problem solving making friends and cooperating with others This program was developed and is owned by Carolyn Webster Stratton now a UW emeritus professor In Strengthening Families Program For Parents and Youth 10 14 parents learn about risk factors for substance use parent child bonding consequences for not following parental guidelines and how to manage anger and family conflict Their children learn effective communication problem solving and how to resist peer pressure Staying Connected with Your Teen helps children 12 17 years old avoid risky sexual activity drug use and violent behavior The program helps parents set strong norms with their teen against antisocial behavior by increasing parental monitoring reducing harsh parenting and rewarding teens to promote family bonding This program was developed by Richard F Catalano and J David Hawkins in the UW School of Social Work Haggerty and his fellow researchers hope local policymakers will pay attention to these and other scientifically tested programs as they discuss investments in child and adolescent resources He said it s important to invest in children now before negative outcomes cost society more in the form of law enforcement prisons and physical and mental treatment programs Co authors of the study are Anne McGlynn Wright and Tali Klima of the UW The research was supported in part by the National Institute on Drug Abuse For more information contact Haggerty at haggerty uw edu or 206 543 3188 Link to research paper http www emeraldinsight com journals htm articleid 17101621 Doree Armstrong wrote this news release while on assignment at the UW Office of News and Information Reporters needing help with this story can contact Molly McElroy mollywmc uw edu 206 543 2580 Share this Facebook Twitter Email Print Tagged with Kevin Haggerty School of Social Work Social Development Research Group Office of News Information Browse Articles Contact Us
