    relationship with the Fred Hutchinson IRB which now reviews studies by UW faculty who are members of the Cancer Consortium Because of its expertise in cancer research the Fred Hutchinson IRB can provide quicker turnaround for these projects Added 11 new HSD staff members enabling HSD to deliver more client centered services and decrease the review time for Minimal Risk applications Enhanced web based information and training resources developing new customized courses for Biomedical and Social Behavioral researchers staff and students Developing metrics to identify areas for overall quality improvement in UW s oversight of human subjects research Improving the minimal risk review process HSD s goal is to significantly reduce the review time for minimal risk applications Implementing new database for managing review process and cutting review time Designing and Implementing Electronic Research Administration Systems We re committed to rebuilding the University s infrastructure for research administration and positioning the UW to excel in the decades ahead The Office of Research Information Systems is providing leadership as the University transitions from a paper based to electronic research administration ERA and the entire research community faculty deans and chairs and the many UW offices that provide administrative support to researchers is partnering in the design of these new systems Our goal is to develop a cohesive user centered ERA system with the strength to meet current users needs and the flexibility to adapt quickly as those needs change Recent achievements Streamlined management of the UW s ERA project creating a tiered decision making process that s more responsive to changing user needs Collaborated with School of Medicine to produce a new online guide that offers step by step instructions for using Grants gov with information and resources tailored to the needs of UW researchers Although written with health sciences researchers in mind the guide is proving to be a useful resource for researchers across campus Developed new SAGE features that allow users to upload route and review files related to grant applications Launch of the new tools will be phased over several months so that the SAGE team can monitor system performance and users experiences The new tools will be available campus wide in time for major spring application deadlines Supporting Researchers During the Transition to Grants gov OR and OSP are providing support to researchers as they work with Grants gov which has created sweeping changes in the federal grants submission process Over the past year Office of Sponsored Programs staff have collaborated with the research community to anticipate potential problems and develop a range of resources and strategies to help PIs and research administrators OSP developed a central website Grants gov at the UW to serve as the central access point for Grants gov resources and information including updates from sponsors online training resources and access to a network of peer mentors who can assist users with Grants gov applications to specific agencies Collaborated with schools and colleges to identify potential problems with Grants gov and develop a

  • Outside Professional Work for Compensation (Form 1460) | UW Research
    involving presenting guest lectures delivering scholarly papers serving on review panels participating in accreditation activities The above activities are not subject to limitations on outside work and do not require prior approval as such If the activities involve travel however approval for travel away from the University must be sought from the appropriate supervisor Such activities should be reported annually using the Annual Report of Outside Activities Form 1461 This exclusion does not apply to teaching courses for credit or participating in continuing education activities not under the aegis of the University of Washington prior approval for such activities must be sought UW Facilities Equipment Resources De minimis use of University facilities and resources may be permissible for approved Outside Work For information regarding the University s Policy on the use of UW facilities equipment or resources please refer to Administrative Policy Statement 47 2 especially section 3 c Frequently Asked Questions Who Do I need to request approval for outside work carried out in the summer if I have a nine month appointment which does not include the summer No If the outside work will take place exclusively in the summer will not involve use of UW resources will not involve teaching at another institution and does not conflict with any UW policy then prior approval is not required Do I need to request approval for my outside work if I have a part time faculty appointment Yes Time commitment is not the only aspect of outside work that is considered Form 1460 will also be reviewed for conflicts with UW policies as well as financial conflicts of interest or academic conflicts Do I need to request approval for consulting that I have already disclosed in the Financial Interest Disclosure System FIDS Yes Your FIDS disclosure is required to initiate the process for assuring that your research or technology transfer activities are not in conflict with the financial interest resulting from your consulting Your Form 1460 will be reviewed for conflicts with other UW policies and other types of conflicts such as academic conflicts I have a part time administrative appointment in addition to my faculty position From whom do I obtain approval If the outside professional work pertains to your faculty position obtain approval from your chair and dean chancellor If it pertains to your administrative position obtain approval from your administrative supervisor What What counts as compensation Compensation is defined very broadly in the UW policy and includes payments of any kind equity interests e g stock or options and intellectual property Under the policy it is still considered compensation even if you waive or assign compensation or if the compensation is in kind What is the number of days I am allowed to engage in outside work You are allowed up to one day per week seven calendar days of the time you work for the UW If you are at 100 FTE then you are allowed a maximum of 52 days per year If you
