    to develop the intellectual tools and skills necessary to work as professionals They gain experience in analyzing cases statutes and other legal materials thereby learning the structure and operation of the legal system Despite its status as a state university law school we offer courses that provide a broad view of the American legal system Although faculty members may present the Washington view on a particular issue as an illustration for a broad ranging discussion graduates of the school are well prepared to practice law anywhere in the United States Our Students Each fall an entering class of about 180 J D students begins the study of law The high number of applications received each year allows the School of Law to select an exceptional student body Our students are academically sound and culturally diverse Their educational and professional backgrounds create a stimulating intellectual atmosphere All students take a full time course load the School of Law does not have a part time or evening division Our Faculty The University of Washington School of Law offers a student to faculty ratio of 10 1 Faculty areas of specialization include labor law tax law international law environmental and water law family law real property law laws concerning business organization commercial law constitutional law the law of sex and race discrimination American Indian law intellectual property and health law In addition there are several faculty members specifically interested in questions of legal history legal philosophy and law and social science These interests are reflected in the School s curriculum Our Library The Marian Gould Gallagher Law Library houses a collection of more than 650 000 volumes establishing it as one of the largest university law collections on the West Coast In addition to an extensive research collection it supports the Asian Law

    the position She received her B A from Indiana University at Bloomington and graduated summa cum laude from the University of Indiana School of Law where she was editor in chief of the Indiana Law Journal Dean Testy has published extensively on topics including business law gender and the law social justice and legal education Dean Testy was recently voted by the Association of American Law Schools AALS to be the AALS President Elect Dean Testy has been actively involved with the AALS for several years including serving a three year term on the Committee on Recruitment and Retention of Minority Law Teachers and Students 2007 2009 and serving as a member of the 2009 Planning Committee for the highly successful Conference on Business Associations She also chaired the Planning Committee for the AALS Workshop for New Law Teachers 2010 Most recently she served as co chair of the AALS Section for the Law School Dean and is a current member of the AALS Committee on Audit and Association Investment Policy and the AALS Executive Committee In addition to her work with the AALS Dean Testy has also served on the Board of Governors of the Society of American Law Teachers as well as several committees of the ABA Section on Legal Education In 2010 she chaired the ABA New Dean s Workshop and has been a long serving member of its faculty committee Dean Testy began her legal career working for Kirkland Ellis in Chicago and after graduation from law school she clerked for Judge Jesse E Eschbach U S Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit At the end of her clerkship in 1992 she began her academic career She joined the faculty of Seattle University Law School and became its dean in 2005 Dean Testy has received

    program It was the only library program in the United States to require a law degree for admission 1944 Marian Gould Gallagher appointed Law Librarian and Professor of Law Her career as director of the University of Washington Law Library spanned 37 years until her retirement in 1981 The library collection grows to over 114 000 volumes by 1950 1953 A formal placement program is established at the law school with Professor J Gordon Gose as Placement Officer Today the Center for Career and Leadership Development is headed by an Assistant Dean and four Assistant Directors The placement rate in 2004 was nearly 100 1960 Marjorie Rombauer appointed Professor of Law She is the first non librarian tenured female faculty member at the law school 1962 Asian Law Graduate Program is established by Professors Arval Morris Cornelius Peck and Ralph Johnson with support from the Ford Foundation 1963 Professor Lehan Tunks pictured appointed Dean During his deanship the law school adopts the highly successful small section program for first year students which continues today 1974 The law school moves off campus to the second Condon Hall on Campus Parkway pictured The building increases the school s square footage substantially but is intended to be Phase 1 of a larger project Phase 2 never begins 1979 Charles Z Smith establishes the Clinical Law Program C Z Smith goes on to become the first African Americanand and the first Latino on the Washington Supreme Court Today there are over 100 students participating in 9 clinics at the law school 1981 The Board of Regents rename the University of Washington School of Law Library to honor Marian Gould Gallagher s pictured invaluable contributions to the University s law school and professions of law and librarianship The Trial Advocacy Program is established 1985 Penny A Hazelton pictured appointed Law Librarian and Professor of Law Today the library has over 562 000 volumes making it one of the largest law libraries west of the Mississippi First student computer lab is carved out of a corner of the library 1990 Professor Wallace Loh appointed Dean He is the first Chinese American law school dean in the nation He begins the drive for a new law building and secures the lead gift of 12 million from Bill and Melinda Gates in honor of William H Gates Sr class of 1950 Pacific Rim Law Policy Journal established 1992 The Center for Advanced Study and Research on Intellectual Property CASRIP becomes a part of the UW School of Law 1994 Public Interest Law Association PILA established The student body initiates and overwhelmingly approves a mandatory public service requirement all J D students beginning with the class of 1997 are required to perform at least 60 hours of public service legal work during their second or third year in order to graduate 1995 Professor Roland Hjorth pictured appointed Dean He continues the drive for the new building and by 2000 meets the minimum private funding goal of 34 million Graduate
