    Mathematics undergraduate program and 200 in the joint ACMS program Recent Department News Kitty Baxter makes estate gift to AMS April 2015 Kitty Baxter long time faculty member and student advisor who retired in 1985 and died in 2012 is featured in the current issue of the American Mathematical Society s newsletter The Line in recognition of her generous estate gift to the AMS Kitty completed her PhD at UC Berkeley in 1959 under Abraham Seidenberg then moved to Seattle with her husband Edward Scott O Keefe and joined the department O Keefe was a member of a prominent mathematical family including uncle Griffith Evans former president of the AMS long time chair at Berkeley and eponym of the department s current home Kitty s gift will support mathematical research Tatiana Toro awarded Guggenheim Fellowship April 2015 On April 8 the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation announced the recipients of its 2015 Fellowships listing the recipients the next day in a full page ad in the New York Times The fellowships are intended for men and women who have already demonstrated exceptional capacity for productive scholarship or exceptional creative ability in the arts Tatiana Toro is one of two mathematicians this year to receive the honor which will allow her to further her research in geometric measure theory harmonic analysis and partial differential equations Matt Junge to receive UW Excellence in Teaching Award April 2015 Matt Junge who was featured in this space in January for his work at the Washington Correction Center for Women has been named one of the recipients of the university s Excellence in Teaching Award to be presented on June 11 at the annual university event honoring all Awards of Excellence recipients The award is given to two graduate students each year for demonstration of

    expanded in the early 20th century Instrumental to its growth was the appointment of Professor Robert Moritz to the mathematics and astronomy faculty Moritz s stay at Washington was to be a long one For thirty two years he remained head of the Department of Mathematics and for many years chaired the astronomy department as well One of the most colorful of his early appointments was E T Bell Although he was born in Peterhead Scotland Bell came to the United States for his university education completing an A B at Stanford an M A at the University of Washington in 1908 and a Ph D at Columbia in 1912 The mathematics department at Washington thought highly of Bell and began negotiations to bring him back to Seattle in the summer of 1912 On September 5 Bell wired Moritz accepting his offer Bell s lifelong mathematical interest was in elliptic functions and number theory During his academic career which lasted from 1912 until 1953 he produced some 200 mathematical research papers While at the University of Washington he published numerous significant contributions on analytic number theory multiply periodic functions and Diophantine analysis In addition to his research writing Bell published fifteen books on mathematics Two of these Men of Mathematics and The Development of Mathematics are still widely read A prodigious writer Bell wrote seventeen science fiction novels under the pseudonym John Taine He also authored one short story as well as some poetry His productivity was well noted and in 1922 he was promoted to full professor at an annual salary of 3 500 Within a year the Department upped Bell s salary to 4 500 to meet a competing offer In December 1924 Bell received the Bôcher prize from the American Mathematical Society for a paper on Arithmetrical
