    book that gave us Shakespeare February 25 2016 at 5 30 PM HopCat Detroit Pull up a stool grab a drink and learn something new The First Folio the book that gave us Shakespeare is headed to Detroit But before it arrives in March Knowledge on Tap presents ldquo The Bard at the bar Exploring the book that gave us Shakespeare rdquo to give insight into one of the most influential books in human history and the author who gave us that work Join Ken Jackson chair of Wayne State University rsquo s Department of English to learn about the Bard his life and the literary classics that might have been lost forever We will begin at 5 30 p m on Thursday Feb 25 at HopCat Detroit s Huma Room in Midtown The presentation begins at 6 p m Many of Shakespeare s plays which were written to be performed were not published during his lifetime The First Folio is the first collected edition of Shakespeare rsquo s plays It was published in 1623 seven years after the playwright s death Two of Shakespeare s fellow actors compiled 36 of his plays hoping to preserve them for future generations Without it we would not have 18 of the Bard rsquo s plays including Macbeth Julius Caesar Twelfth Night and The Tempest In addition to his chair duties Jackson is a professor of English in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Wayne State He received his Ph D in English with distinction from Loyola University of Chicago His research and writings on Shakespeare have appeared in numerous journal articles and books Most recently Jackson released his book Shakespeare and Abraham which illuminates Shakespeare rsquo s dramatic fascination with the story of Abraham rsquo s near sacrifice of his son Isaac in Genesis 22 The Folger Shakespeare Library in partnership with Cincinnati Museum Center and the American Library Association is touring the First Folio of Shakespeare throughout 2016 to all 50 states Washington D C and Puerto Rico Wayne State in collaboration with the Detroit Institute of Arts and the Detroit Public Library was selected as the host site for the state of Michigan Knowledge on Tap consists of live mdash and lively mdash discussions with some of Detroit rsquo s greatest minds The events are held every other month at a Midtown bar or restaurant and feature an informal presentation by one of Wayne State rsquo s renowned faculty members on a topic of their choice followed by dynamic conversation All Knowledge on Tap events are free open to the public and require no educational background All ages are welcome Prospective students Tour the Dept of Theatre and Dance February 26 2016 at 4 00 PM Old Main The Maggie Allesee Department of Theatre and Dance is pleased to offer tours of our programs and facilities to all students interested in pursuing undergraduate or graduate studies in theatre or undergraduate studies in dance If this day time is

    year to audition A first year student or a student transferring into the program may begin auditioning in the first semester of study And while many programs place restrictions on students interested in design or stage management in the WSU program undergraduate students are given opportunities to practice their craft 9 Reasons a Theatre Degree Trumps a Business Degree The following is from the blog Change Agent http changeagent wordpress com 2013 09 13 9 ways a theatre degree trumps a business degree Some of you may know this about me some may not Despite having spent the last 15 years as a PR communications professional my college degree is in theatre I have never in my life taken a marketing class or a journalism class or a business class Yet by most measures I m enjoying a successful career in business So what you ask read on I was having a conversation with a friend this week She s an actress Like most actresses she also has a Day Job that she works to pay the bills between acting jobs This is the reality for most working actors in LA New York and the other major centers of the entertainment industry She was pointing out to me that she viewed her theatre background as a weakness in her Day Job career field and that it was holding her back She asked for my advice My advice There IS no weakness in having a theatre background There is only strength Here are just a few skills that a theatre degree gave me that have served me enormously well in business You have advanced critical thinking and problem solving skills taking a script and translating it into a finished production is a colossal exercise in critical thinking You have to make tremendous inferences and intellectual leaps and you have to have a keen eye for subtle clues believe it or not this is a skill that very few people have as finely honed as the theatre people I know That s why I listed it 1 You re calm in a crisis You ve been on stage when somebody dropped a line and you had to improvise to keep the show moving with a smile on your face in front of everyone Your mic died in the middle of a big solo musical number You just sang louder and didn t skip a beat You understand deadlines and respect them Opening Night is non negotiable Enough said You have an eye on audience perception You know what will sell tickets and what will not This is a very transferrable skill and lots of theatre people underestimate this because they think of theatre as an ART and not as a BUSINESS I frequently say even to MBA types that theatre was absolutely the best business education I could have gotten While the business majors were buried in their books and discussing theory we were actually SELLING a PRODUCT to the PUBLIC Most
