    of doing research at Wheaton and how it prepares students for life after college Menu Why Wheaton Welcome New Students Orientation 2015 Highlights Wheaton in China Summer Science Research Christ at the Core Congratulations to the Class of 2015 Photo Contest Office of Multicultural Development Intercultural Studies Financial Aid Stories of Affordability 2014 in Review 2014 Video Contest Winners Rwanda at Wheaton Orientation 2014 A Broader Perspective Learning for the Kingdom An Inspired Work Commencement 2014 Paola Medrano 16 The People The Profs The Practice Wheaton in Chicago A Place to Belong A Week in the Life of Wheaton Archives Research with the Grey Matters Group Each summer Wheaton students have opportunities to work with our exceptional faculty on research projects It s a chance to take what they re learning in the class and apply it to a real world research setting This summer Dr Nate Thom s team of undergraduate students known as the Grey Matters Group are conducting brain research on individuals that experience high stress situations Being able to see a research process through beyond a single semester enables students to pick up intangible skills that employers and graduate schools are looking for Real world Application Prior to teaching in the biology department at Wheaton Dr Thom did his post doctorate work in San Diego with U S Navy Seals He hypothesized that individuals who regularly work under extreme stress and high pressure situations have neurological differences from the average person Dr Thom sees a similarity between those who work in the military service and missionaries both have a sense of calling are constantly moving and oftentimes experience different cultures Eventually Dr Thom would like to see this research shed light on neurological differences that would help equip missionaries before they go into the field as well as help them adjust when they return Benefits of Research at Wheaton Amazing Lab Equipment One of the things about Wheaton College and the sciences here that you re not going to find anywhere else says Dr Thom is access to state of the art equipment We have some of the same technologies that you would find at a large research institution which really is incredible The fact that within a semester students can be collecting data analyzing that data and then helping publish that data you just won t find that at another small school Integration of Faith and Science Wheaton s emphasis on the integration of faith and learning extends directly into the sciences Wheaton does a really good job of challenging the opposition between science and Christianity and showing that your Christianity influences the way you do science and science influences your Christianity said researcher Amy Early 16 This summer Dr Thom s team of students are setting up the infrastructure for this research project and analyzing data Along the way they re also gaining valuable real life experience skills and confidence for the next steps of their journey Biology Department Biology Majors at Wheaton Learn

    Work Commencement 2014 Paola Medrano 16 The People The Profs The Practice Wheaton in Chicago A Place to Belong A Week in the Life of Wheaton Archives At its heart Christ at the Core is a curricular plan that deepens Wheaton College s focus on faith and learning and on our student s capacities to discern God s truth across the disciplines This proposal shifts general education requirements from a distributional framework to an outcomes based model with a Shared Core of common courses and a Thematic Core in which students take an array of courses designed to satisfy broad outcomes The Shared Core fosters developmental learning through pursuit of the Christian liberal arts with special attention to integrating faith with learning through a First Year Seminar a mid career integrative Advanced Seminar and finally a Core Curriculum Capstone Experience Students will shape their own learning experience to their intellectual needs and vocational calling through their selected Thematic Core courses which draw upon the strengths of the academic disciplines but allow for multidisciplinary and creative course offerings Christ is at the center of our pursuit of excellence in learning So in opening this exciting new chapter of general education we re really making a commitment as a community to grow in faithfulness to him said General Education Summit Committee member Abigail Canfield 15 The program is meant to give greater flexibility to faculty in shaping curricular options and greater flexibility to students as they strive to integrate their core learning with their work in their major fields Our hope and sincere expectation said President Philip Ryken 88 is that the new general education curriculum will keep Jesus Christ at the center of a Wheaton education reinforce our liberal arts identity strengthen faculty ownership of general education and provide students with

    Congratulations to the Class of 2015 On May 10 the class of 2015 processed across the stage of Edman Chapel to receive their diplomas Menu Why Wheaton Welcome New Students Orientation 2015 Highlights Wheaton in China Summer Science Research Christ at the Core Congratulations to the Class of 2015 Photo Contest Office of Multicultural Development Intercultural Studies Financial Aid Stories of Affordability 2014 in Review 2014 Video Contest Winners Rwanda at Wheaton Orientation 2014 A Broader Perspective Learning for the Kingdom An Inspired Work Commencement 2014 Paola Medrano 16 The People The Profs The Practice Wheaton in Chicago A Place to Belong A Week in the Life of Wheaton Archives Growing Transformative Life changing Inspiring Amazing These are just some of the words this year s graduates used to describe their Wheaton experience Commencement Challenge The 156th commencement ceremony featured speaker Bob Fu who had an important message to the 575 graduates Fu is the author of God s Double Agent The True Story of a Chinese Christian s Fight for Freedom Arrested and imprisoned in China for his faith Fu and his family became refugees before coming to the U S He currently serves with ChinaAID an international non profit Christian human rights organization committed to promoting religious freedom and rule of law in China What will you do with your unbelievable heritage of freedom prosperity and the knowledge of the true gospel of Jesus Christ asked Fu No other generation has the head start in life that most of you do today Do not waste it Realize you have been given these things for a higher purpose The world is waiting with outstretched hands What will you place into these hands Class Gifts The class of 2015 is the first to make two class gifts a display case in the foyer of Blanchard Hall near the Burr Obelisk and a Journey to Freedom scholarship for international students who have experienced conflict or discrimination from their home country After Wheaton The grads are heading out for a variety of jobs travel and opportunities They ll be working for companies like 3M Chatham Financial FCA and Al Jazeera getting married traveling overseas pursuing masters degrees and starting internships It s an exciting time of new beginnings and we pray that each one goes out knowing they ll always have a home at Wheaton Wheaton College The Value of a Wheaton Education Learn more about the practical outcomes and benefits of a liberal arts degree from Wheaton College including highly marketable skills superior academic credentials and the formation and preparation of the whole person for all of life s vocations More Affordability and Value Financial Implications A liberal arts education is an investment of time and money Here are some of the ways Wheaton College is working to make your investment affordable and why the cost is more than worth it More Share This Page Feedback Media Center Giving to Wheaton Back to Top About Wheaton Value of a Wheaton Education

    Paola Medrano 16 The People The Profs The Practice Wheaton in Chicago A Place to Belong A Week in the Life of Wheaton Archives We asked students to share photos that epitomized their Wheaton experience and judges from across campus narrowed it down to 10 winning photos and 15 honorable mentions Photo Contest 2015 Winners Photo Contest 2015 Honorable Mention With more than 500 photos of everything from dorm raids to sunsets over the Black Hills we learned a lot about the diversity of the Wheaton experience Here are a few of our observations Adventure Whether it s a semester abroad or a spring break trip we are always surprised by the things students bring a camera along for Dorm life Students love their dorms and shared photos of so many activities that take place there including raids floor worship and Friday afternoon tea HoneyRock HoneyRock is a big part of the Wheaton experience Whether its photos from Passage or the WIN program we received close to 50 photos of HoneyRock especially sunsets and starry nights A new perspective We received awesome aerial shots of campus and several photos of a students using quadcopters to take pictures We were impressed Prayer We received many photos of our Wheaton Thunder athletes praying before or after games and we love that prayer is a big part of their Wheaton experience Jumping Classic jumping shots from around the globe we could have made a whole gallery of students jumping on campus in Chicago in the Holy Lands on Spring Break pretty much everywhere The city Students really take advantage of the campus close proximity to Chicago We received beautiful photos of The Bean bikes and incredible shots of Chicago architecture Learning in Authentic Community Learn More About Residential Life at Wheaton The goal

    Welcome New Students Orientation 2015 Highlights Wheaton in China Summer Science Research Christ at the Core Congratulations to the Class of 2015 Photo Contest Office of Multicultural Development Intercultural Studies Financial Aid Stories of Affordability 2014 in Review 2014 Video Contest Winners Rwanda at Wheaton Orientation 2014 A Broader Perspective Learning for the Kingdom An Inspired Work Commencement 2014 Paola Medrano 16 The People The Profs The Practice Wheaton in Chicago A Place to Belong A Week in the Life of Wheaton Archives Director Rodney Sisco 84 has been involved since the Office of Multicultural Development OMD started at Wheaton during the 1970s He s seen the department go through a lot of changes including multiple names Office of Minority Affairs Office of Minority Student Development Office of Multicultural Student Development But through the years OMD has remained committed to being a home for students of color a resource for ethnic majority students who want to learn more about Christ centered diversity and an encouragement to the College to cultivate Christian unity that values and celebrates ethnic and cultural diversity In 2013 a new space for OMD was created in Lower Beamer to serve as a place where students can stop by any time for a snack a cup of coffee and the chance to reflect on our identity as it relates to ethnicity and culture It s a place to interact with people of diverse backgrounds and together work through questions of what it means to live as the people of God Of course when all the things were happening in the nation and in Ferguson a lot of students were in here asking how can we respond recalls Sisco But that is the joy of seeing our students working together Our students were thinking deeply about how we are engaged in issues of diversity on and off campus We the OMD staff get to speak life into these students as they are thinking through these different ideas and we get to have the opportunity to push them forward and also be with them when they re going through challenging times OMD currently works with a series of student organizations including Wheaton College Gospel Choir William Osborne Society Koinonia Mu Kappa MK TCK students Unidad Christiana 1 2 1 Program Shalom Community Part of being the body of Christ is that we understand what grace is says Sisco Grace says that we are to be patient with each other We spend time with each other We re preparing young men and women to know how to address that outside of Wheaton how to be people who are able to engage with difference and conflict in a way that still says we re doing it as men and women of God Go Deeper Multicultural Development at Wheaton Learn how the Wheaton community is proactively pursuing unity and embracing ethnic diversity on campus through multicultural organizations events the Shalom Community and the work of the Office of Multicultural Development More Student

    settings The M A in Intercultural Studies at Wheaton College Graduate School seeks to meet this need by providing comprehensive practical training for cross cultural service Menu Why Wheaton Welcome New Students Orientation 2015 Highlights Wheaton in China Summer Science Research Christ at the Core Congratulations to the Class of 2015 Photo Contest Office of Multicultural Development Intercultural Studies Financial Aid Stories of Affordability 2014 in Review 2014 Video Contest Winners Rwanda at Wheaton Orientation 2014 A Broader Perspective Learning for the Kingdom An Inspired Work Commencement 2014 Paola Medrano 16 The People The Profs The Practice Wheaton in Chicago A Place to Belong A Week in the Life of Wheaton Archives Two million people from the U S go on a short term missions trip each year and the U S is one of the most diverse countries on the globe With the world becoming more interconnected every day there s never been a better time to consider a degree in intercultural studies With over 1 000 alumni working and serving locally and abroad the M A in Intercultural Studies from Wheaton College Graduate School provides training from faculty who have years of international work experience And the program is also offered in a modular format that provides course flexibility for the working professional Intercultural Studies Chair Dr Robert Gallagher believes in the wide application of the degree in today s world Intercultural studies is important to every single person that follows Jesus because we re living in such a cross cultural mix of ethnicities races and languages and cultures We need to have some understanding and learn to appreciate each other s cultures he said and learn to be more sensitive in sharing the gospel in ways that people can understand The degree has a diverse mix of students from all over the world including Wheaton undergraduate students who enrolled in the program through the Accelerated M A program international students and working professionals who are being equipped to better serve their ministry They realize that every person of a different background has something to contribute says Harry Smith M A 16 We re working for the wider church We re not just working for our agenda or to push some program through Wheaton is very good about a holistic education International student Mutinta Silenga M A 16 has worked in Africa and Japan and is enrolled in Wheaton s program so that she can help train leaders in Africa The faculty not only focus on the Bible she said but they help you to relate the Bible to current issues like public health or community development To learn more about applying to Wheaton s M A in Intercultural Studies visit wheaton edu INTR Wheaton College Graduate School Learn more about Wheaton College Graduate School including programs requirements and how to apply More Intercultural Studies Alumni in the Field Read how Wheaton s MA program prepared alumni to work in a variety of areas from administration to Christian
