midst of a world that sometimes would rather not hear the honest truth see above re truth vs love My whole life my experience was of the church valuing the Sunday school answer Workout taught me that being a Christian demands more than easy or pithy that sometimes the question is as valuable as the answer and that the answers are not always simple Christy Estoll 98 Homemaker Nursing Student Lafayette CO Workout changed my life I mean in every way possible Five years after graduating I m not doing professional theater but everyday I draw on my theater experience at Workout and what I learned about life myself and how God views the world I learned how to breathe be fully present in the moment relate to people very different from me and be more wholly me I became a healthier person and learned how to express that too My heart for others grew through this time but so did my ability to relate to the world around me And all this is even more significantly impacting my daily walk and desire for intimacy with God Christy Fleming 04 Business Professional Minneapolis MN It was one of the first rehearsals of my first show at Arena Theater and I sat in a circle on the floor listening to older theater students speak Just speak And listen Just listen For a few moments it was like they were talking with a thick and far off accent that I couldn t quite understand These people were speaking and listening more humanly than I had ever known and my unpracticed spirit didn t quite know how to translate But I do remember one thought this is where I need to be This is why I came to Wheaton In retrospect I can t imagine my life today with Workout and Arena Theater It gave me the language body spirit and mind to speak with the world as my heart has always longed to speak Blake V Kent 02 Pastor Writer Photographer Vancouver BC Ten years after graduating from Wheaton College I now live in a very poor neighborhood of Buffalo New York and work as the Arts Director of an urban non for profit Peace of the City I work with youth who will never have the opportunities or access to resources that I had My biggest project to date was directing our 2009 production of Romeo and Juliet with 25 high schoolers from 12 different public schools Within Arena Theater and Workout I was invited into a safe creative community The energy of our Workout community and the individuals in it was both vulnerable and powerful As I work to create and translate sacred spaces for the least of these I am daily informed by my work my friends and my teachers at Arena Megan McClain Kwacz 00 Creative Arts Director Buffalo NY I didn t come to Wheaton for the theater department but that is where I ended up spending

valuable stage skills matured in this incubator It might be said that any team any club any cast will grow close as they work together But the people of the Workout Group were connecting at various levels all at once sinews and synapses trauma and trust It was a novel approach to theater training then and it remains unique today Of course Jim gathered exercises and improvisational games from his own background at the Universities of Michigan Wisconsin and Massachusetts and he developed new ones He borrowed heavily from techniques of the organic theater of that era but he also brought from his own evangelical background a rich sense of Christian meaning Actors like all artists are re creators celebrating God s creation by continuing to reshape it in creative ways Actors also honor the incarnation of Christ by embodying truth In a community like the Workout Group actors learn to love one another By stepping into the shoes of a character in fact by assuming the body of a character the actor is almost literally fulfilling Christ s challenge to love your neighbor as yourself In the 1970 s Wheaton College was pioneering the integration and faith and learning and Jim Young was doing these as well as anybody Workout students were learning cutting edge acting techniques imbued with Christian meaning Year by year Workout graduates were set loose on the world A few went on to graduate training and into theater careers But many others brought their integrative Workout philosophy with them as they worked with community theaters directed school plays or started church drama groups Still others used their Workout inspired sense of community building risk taking and personal authenticity in business or ministry The Workout model is a process of theater training personal development and spiritual

  • Workout FAQ | Wheaton
for Workout Anybody who wants to Many students who have never acted before coming to Wheaton have auditioned for and gotten into Workout High school experience is sometimes helpful in the process of learning to act but the way we go about things in Arena Theater is usually significantly different than what a student did in high school regardless of their experience Auditioning for Workout is meant to be fun most have found it so What are the auditions like Workout auditions are held once a year in the fall The auditions are done in groups of six to eight and last about an hour Small sections of text are handed out ahead of time from which auditioners choose a piece to memorize and work on as part of the audition So Say I audition for Workout and get in will I be overwhelmed by the commitment What s expected of me as a Workout member Workout is a big commitment The central time commitment is our twice weekly Workout sessions Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4 15 5 30 A copy of the Workout Commitment listing all the things Workout members agree to do is attached It should be noted that we take special care not to overburden Freshmen and that the attrition rate for Workout people who for one reason or another leave the group is very low something less than 5 of those who get in The bottom line is that participation in Workout is meant to enhance your broader Wheaton College experience not to make it more difficult What do you do in the twice weekly sessions Is it like rehearsal Not really The TR 4 15 5 30 time is meant to build and strengthen our theater community using theater games physical work and simply being
