    Wear Michael Gerson Recent Events Ken Wytsma GC2 Summit Wytsma Ferguson Commission Vigen Guroian David Moore CACE Events Archive The Center for Applied Christian Ethics will host Michael J Gerson and a panel from Center for Public Justice The lecture will focus on reducing juvenile incarceration as well as address the racial disparities that exist We will also explore community based solutions This lecture is based on the book Unleashing Opportunity Why Escaping Poverty Requires a Shared Vision of Justice and will include authors Michael Gerson Katie Thompson and Stephanie Summers Michael J Gerson is a Visiting Fellow at Center for Public Justice and is a nationally syndicated columnist who appears twice weekly in The Post Until 2006 Gerson was a top aide to President George W Bush as assistant to the president for policy and strategic planning Michael is a 1986 graduate of Wheaton College Stephanie Summers is the CEO of the Center for Public Justice an independent non partisan civic education and public policy organization based in Washington D C and is the publisher of the online journals Capital Commentary and Shared Justice Ms Summers is a member of the advisory board for the Institute for Public Service

    Hot Topics Ethics Links Penner Foundation David A Penner Biography David A Penner Debates 2003 Debate 2004 Debates 2009 Debates 2010 Debates CACE Events Vigen Guroian Vigen Guroian Christian Moral Formation Lectureship Menu Michael Wear Michael Gerson Recent Events Ken Wytsma GC2 Summit Wytsma Ferguson Commission Vigen Guroian David Moore CACE Events Archive Fairy Tales and the Moral Imagination Thursday October 22nd 7PM Blanchard 339 CACE s 2015 Christian Moral Formation Lectureship features Dr Guroian Professor of Religious Studies in Orthodox Christianity at the University of Virginia and a recipient of the University of Virginia Student Council Distinguished Teacher Award His lecture will include his book Tending the Heart of Virtue which offers parents and teachers a much needed roadmap to some of our finest children s stories Throughout the book Guroian highlights the classical moral virtues such as courage goodness and honesty especially as they are understood in traditional Christianity At the same time he so persuasively evokes the enduring charm of these familiar works that many readers will be inspired to reread their favorites and explore those they may have missed Guroian illuminates the complex ways in which fairy tales and fantasies educate the moral imagination from earliest childhood Examining a wide range of stories from Pinocchio and The Little Mermaid to Charlotte s Web The Velveteen Rabbit The Wind in the Willows and the Chronicles of Narnia he argues that these tales capture the meaning of morality through vivid depictions of the struggle between good and evil in which characters must make difficult choices between right and wrong or heroes and villains contest the very fate of imaginary worlds Character and the virtues are depicted compellingly in these stories the virtues glimmer as if in a looking glass and wickedness and deception are unmasked of their pretensions
