    Video on Tolkien Audio on Other Wade Authors Reading Group Session Audio Wade Visual Tour Get Involved Donate Materials Volunteer Wade Center Welcome Our Purpose Our Purpose Menu Our Purpose Visitor Information Hours of Operation and Closings Staff Listing History Museum The Wade Center was founded for the purpose of gathering and publicizing the books manuscripts letters and other writings of seven noted British authors Owen Barfield G K Chesterton C S Lewis George MacDonald Dorothy L Sayers J R R Tolkien and Charles Williams This special collection and archives is a tribute to the importance of the literary historical and Christian heritage of these writers Together these seven authors form a school of thought as they valued and promoted the life of the mind and the imagination Through service to those who use its resources and by making known the words of its seven authors the Wade Center strives to continue their legacy We pursue this goal by making the collection s materials accessible to researchers and casual visitors in our reading room and museum maintaining an educational presence through publications and lectures cultivating a network of professional contacts through participation in conferences and collaboration with other organizations that share our goals If you would like to participate in furthering the work of the Wade Center we invite you to become a part of the Friends of the Wade Members of this program provide tax deductible donations which support those expenses and designated purchases that are not covered by our endowment Due to the generosity and efforts of many individuals the Wade Center has developed over the years into an internationally recognized repository and research facility Interest in the seven authors of the Wade Center continues to grow resulting in ever increasing opportunities for us to serve visitors of

    a correspondence with C S Lewis Over the next several years he had the opportunity to meet Lewis and eventually received 15 letters from him After C S Lewis s death in 1963 Dr Kilby was inspired to establish the The C S Lewis Collection a repository that eventually would include not only Lewis items but also materials from six other British writers whom Lewis either knew or who significantly influenced him Owen Barfield G K Chesterton George MacDonald Dorothy L Sayers J R R Tolkien and Charles Williams Dr Kilby s proposal to form a Lewis Collection was accepted by the Wheaton College Library Committee in 1965 and he began the years of travel relationship building and gathering of materials that would lay a strong foundation for the Collection In 1974 friends and family of Marion E Wade businessman and C S Lewis aficionado established an endowment in his memory to support the Collection which was then renamed The Marion E Wade Collection In 1980 the Center published the first volume of its academic journal SEVEN An Anglo American Literary Review Dr Kilby Dr Beatrice Batson and Dr Barbara Reynolds founded SEVEN to provide a venue for critical assessment of the works of the seven Wade authors Following Dr Kilby s retirement in 1981 the Wade Center has flourished under directors Dr Lyle W Dorsett 1983 1990 and Dr Christopher W Mitchell 1994 2013 Over the years as the collection grew the Wade Center was moved between various locations on Wheaton College s campus including Blanchard Hall and Buswell Library In 1998 with the generous help of Marion Wade s daughter Mary the Wade Center began construction of a new limestone building fashioned after the style of an English manor house which opened in 2001 This facility has made

    books letters manuscripts and artifacts Through these exhibits we invite our visitors to explore more deeply the seven authors lives writings and the historical context in which they lived Permanent pieces on display in the museum include a wardrobe owned by C S Lewis desks and pens belonging to C S Lewis and J R R Tolkien bookshelves from Charles Williams the eyeglasses of Dorothy L Sayers and Owen Barfield s chess set and pipe Museum exhibits are changed regularly so check back often Current Exhibits Wade Center s 50th Anniversary The Canterbury Festival Plays The Wade Authors Their Reflections on Each Other C S Lewis s Tales of Adventure Charles Williams and Victor Gollancz The Story of a Publishing Team Dorothy L Sayers responds to scientist Fred Hoyle on BBC Radio interactive audio exhibit J R R Tolkien A Film Portrait interactive video exhibit Boxen C S Lewis s Childhood Chronicles before Narnia interactive exhibit The Wade Authors as Children is an exhibit featuring childhood portraits of the Wade authors from the Wade Center s photograph collections The display also discusses what their home environments were like growing up and their childhood interests and pursuits Can you guess which author goes with which photo Give it a try on your next visit Display on The Hobbit Our large scale map of Middle earth invites you to follow the path of Bilbo Baggins the hobbit as he travels there and back again charting his journey through the story of The Hobbit Along the way you will encounter trolls goblins spiders mountains rivers and vast forests Watch out for Smaug the dragon A binder of letters written by school children to characters in the book is also included This display celebrates the 75th anniversary of The Hobbit and features artwork by
