    your own taxes can often be quite complicated Therefore the Office of International Programs has compiled the following information to assist you However Whittier College and the Office of International Programs staff are not tax professionals and cannot provide individualized tax advising and or filing assistance Who must file tax forms All international students MUST file taxes even if you have never worked in the United States When do I need to file the tax forms Tax statements will be sent to you after January 1 These will come from your employer s bank s Whittier College etc The deadline for submitting your tax forms is April 15 What tax forms do I need to file If you did not earn any income during the previous year you must submit the following Form 8843 If you did earn income during the previous year you will need to submit the following Form 8843 Federal tax returns Form 1040NR or Form 1040NR EZ If you earned above a certain amount of money you may also be required to submit California State tax returns using Form 540NR Long Form or Form540NR Short Form To see if you need to file California State taxes visit the Franchise Tax Board s website scroll to the bottom of the page click Continue then answer each question to determine if you are required to file California State taxes or not What information do I need to file my taxes You will need a Social Security Number SSN or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number ITIN to complete the Federal 1040 NR Federal 1040NR EZ and California State 540NR If you do not have a SSN or ITIN at the time you file taxes you may apply for an ITIN in conjunction with filing your tax return You do not

  • Mayor Garcetti Challenges the Class of 2015 to Cross Borders and Take Down Boundaries | Whittier College
    Whittier College s 112th Commencement ceremony held indoors at the Graham Athletic Center for the first time in the history of the College More than 400 members of the class of 2015 received their undergraduate and graduate degrees as well as an insightful message from their Commencement Speaker Mayor of Los Angeles Eric Garcetti who encouraged them to forget the rain forget the stress and breathe in this moment I try to speak from the heart because this is an incredible moment right now said Garcetti It is a joyous occasion for you and for me to be here addressing you The 42nd Mayor of Los Angeles known for his back to basics agenda is the youngest mayor of the city of angels in more than 100 years a jazz pianist and a lieutenant in the United States Navy Reserve You have all crossed borders to be here today said Garcetti Whether they are physical or temporal you re about to cross a new border today and you should embrace the sense of unease and excitement that comes with it We re at a time of great divide said Garcetti I charge you with the responsibility of creating borders instead of boundaries between each other Your success will be determined on how successfully you can navigate borders throughout your life Before delivering his keynote address Garcetti became an honorary Poet as he was conferred with a doctorate of humane letters L H D by Professor Nat Zappia Whittier native and transfer student Jaimis Ulrich an anthropology major and religious studies minor delivered a powerful student address Something happened at Whittier that I wasn t expecting said Ulrich I turned into a we My investment into my classes was something contingent and shared Our Whittier education has taught us to make
