    school Submit your housing preference sheet If you are interested in rooming with a specific person please submit your roommate choice to CAAS Mark Orientation dates on your calendar and make it a point to attend all Orientation sessions Valuable information is shared during these sessions like handling business academic resources and registration questions Follow the dorm checklist if you plan on living on campus In the First Few Weeks Seek a balance and get involved on campus Go to the activities fair and select a small number of clubs organizations to participate in don t overdo it Look ahead and get organized You will be receiving a lot of information over the course of the semester It is advisable that you keep your classes in separate folders and notebooks More importantly once you get your syllabi you will need to keep a planner with weeks and months to write down upcoming significant dates projects and exams Strive for good grades Visit CAAS if you would like tips on how to be a successful college student time management study skills procrastination tips etc Find the ideal place for you to study Living in a dorm or being a commuter leaves very little places to study in your living area Try CAAS the Wardman Library Cultural Center or The Spot lounge Find a place suitable to your learning style Schedule a meeting with each of your professors to get to know them Whittier is a small campus and professors appreciate knowing their students as individuals Meet with your peer mentors They have the experience of being at Whittier and can help with your transition They can also help you with your writing class advice on class selection time management and much more During Your First Semester Go to class Professors will

    academic and social success of our students This page provides an overview of just some of the experiences our First Year Experience program will bring to your son or daughter as well as how to best navigate the services available to him or her In providing this information we hope you will assist your student in making a seamless transition to college life Components of the First Year Program Living Learning Communities LLCs Incoming first year students who live on campus will be housed in one of two first year residence halls Stauffer or Johnson Hall known as Living Learning Communities LLCs consist of groups of 15 16 students taking two linked courses together one of which is the Freshman Writing Seminar INTD 100 and are housed as roommates and or in rooms in close proximity Students who do not live on campus commuters will also be required to take the Freshman Writing Seminar and linked course and are given access to LLCs until 7 00 p m with the intention of working in study groups with the students from their courses Academic Advising Mentorship Programs The Center for Advising and Academic Success CAAS empowers students to become successful self directed and collaborative learners through resources that include tutoring academic coaching workshops writing resources a computer lab study space as well as a full time professional staff trained in academic advising Faculty mentors and upper class students who serves as peer mentors also work with students in selecting their major and provide writing and general academic support Events The First Year program works closely with various departments on campus to host events and programs especially for first year students Of course the campus hosts a number of annual events to keep students and families connected such as Whittier Weekend and Family Celebration and Honors Convocation Navigating the Details Campus Safety The Department of Campus Safety is authorized by Whittier College to protect the campus community and campus property and strives to make the campus safe for all Whittier students Campus Safety officers patrol the campus 24 hours a day seven days a week and are to perform many police functions on property owned and operated by the College such as answering crime calls calls for service and emergencies dealing with parking on campus and providing escort services Student Health Care Whittier s Student Health Wellness Center provides primary health care services as well as health and wellness resources to College residents and commuters The center is staffed throughout the academic year by a full time licensed registered nurse During the week a number of physicians hold rotating office hours and see patients on an appointment or walk in basis All students prior to enrolling at Whittier are asked to complete and submit a health history form and a physician signed health examination form Vehicle Registration All students are allowed to have a vehicle on campus However vehicles must be registered at no charge with the Department of Campus Safety Permits

    soon as possible You will be dropped from courses should you fail to complete these forms and pay tuition by August 5 Student Health Wellness Center forms should be completed as soon as possible Once you submit your health forms they may take up to two weeks to be processed You must meet health form compliance by August 1 It is highly recommended that you complete the Math and Foreign Language Placement Exams in the Academics section Course credit for previous math and foreign language courses will be honored however if additional math or foreign language courses are required to complete your degree or the liberal education requirements these exams will allow you to enroll in these courses Attending Orientation During Transfer Student Orientation you will become acquainted with the resources and personnel at Whittier College While attending Orientation students will have the opportunity to Review your class schedule with a faculty mentor This is your chance to make any last minute changes to your class schedule Get to know your transfer peer mentor who just like you first came to Whittier as a transfer student This person will be your go to peer support person throughout your first semester Meet other transfer students and the members of campus Transfer Student Club as well as the members of any other clubs or organizations you are interested in joining during the Activities Fair Meet potential employers through the Work Study Fair Academic Support Services Opportunities Whittier College provides a number of academic support services and opportunities to its students Support services include Wardman Library provides students with research support quiet study spaces and printing services The Center for Advising and Academic Success located on the ground floor of Wardman Library provides free tutoring academic coaching and workshops advising support and space for group study The GTE Language Lab located in Diehl Hall provides free tutoring for foreign language courses The Writing Center provides writing workshops and drop in writing tutoring in the library Opportunities include Study abroad in locations throughout five continents and at sea The Office of International Programs OIP provides assistance to students who are interested in participating in study abroad Experiential learning through internship volunteer and fellowship opportunities that add prestige to a résumé and help students actualize their intellectual goals in and beyond Whittier College Getting Involved in the Campus Community One of Whittier College s greatest strengths is the strong sense of community that encompasses all students faculty and staff Getting connected promotes success in and outside of the classroom Whittier is well known for its faculty and their attention to teaching and student learning Building relationships with your professors in and out of the classroom through research opportunities advising and other co curricular events will help with the transition into the Whittier community Visit the Work Study and Activities Fairs during Orientation to connect with potential employers and learn how to join Whittier s student clubs societies and varsity club or intramural sports teams Remember
