    undergraduate campus and the Law School to make accessibility easier for you Please call the Student Health Wellness Center at 562 464 4548 to schedule an appointment for your vaccine The ideal time to schedule your flu vaccine is October or November Remember getting the flu vaccine is simple and it s the most important thing you can do to protect yourself and your family from the flu Read Flu 101 College Survival Tips Jorge P Parada MD MPH FACP FIDSA Loyola University MC Complications of the Flu Complications from the flu may include sinus infections ear infections viral or bacterial pneumonia dehydration myositis muscle inflammation pericarditis inflammation around the heart sac and even death The flu can also make chronic health problems worse For example people with asthma may experience more asthma attacks or a worsening of their asthma while they have the flu Influenza Declination Form Download the Influenza Declination Form Flu Vaccine Myths Facts There are lots of myths about flu and flu vaccines which make it difficult to get people vaccinated every year Here are some common myths and facts MYTH The flu shot can cause the flu FACT The flu shot cannot cause the flu there s no way It is a killed virus Most people generally do not experience any side effects from the influenza shot When side effects do occur they are usually mild The most common side effects from the influenza shot are soreness redness tenderness or swelling where the shot is given Low grade fever headache and muscle aches may also occur Flu season coincides with a time of year when bugs causing colds and other respiratory illnesses are in the air Many people get the vaccine and then within a few days get sick with an unrelated cold virus MYTH The flu isn t a serious disease FACT Influenza flu is a serious disease not just a mild illness It affects the nose throat and lungs and it can lead to pneumonia But the flu makes you very sick Each year about 200 000 people in the U S are hospitalized and about 36 000 people die because of the flu That s close to the number of women killed by breast cancer each year and more than twice the number of people killed by AIDS We need to take the flu seriously MYTH The flu shot does not work FACT Most of the time the flu shot will prevent the flu In scientific studies the effectiveness of the flu shot has ranged from 70 to 90 when there is a good match between circulating viruses and those in the vaccine Getting the vaccine is the best protection against the disease MYTH The side effects are worse than the flu FACT The worst side effect you re likely to get from a shot is a sore arm The nasal mist might cause nasal congestion runny nose sore throat and cough The risk of a severe allergic reaction is less than

    Wellness Coalition Contact Us You are here Home Student Health Wellness Medical Vision Plans Medical Vision Plans On 7 May 2013 By rrafferty 0 Comments Kaiser Permanente Medical Health Plan All full time students are required to be enrolled in a medical health insurance plan You can be insured through your parents health plan if you have one or you can purchase the College offered plan which is Kaiser Permanente If you choose to stay on your parents plan you will need to waive the College sponsored student health plan during the open enrollment period If you wish to purchase the Kaiser Permanente Student Health Plan you will need to enroll during open enrollment One or the other must be done otherwise Whittier College will charge the cost of the Student Health Plan to your student account If you enroll or waive the Student Health Plan and you change your mind you can still go back and make that change so long as the change is being made during the open enrollment period The last transaction made by September 30 is the one that the College will honor Enrolling in or Waiving Medical Health Plan Kaiser Permanente is one of the leading health care providers in California You will be able to choose a personal primary care physician and have access to high quality care and online health and wellness services Additionally Kaiser has outpatient facilities near our campus The closest Kaiser Medical Center and Urgent Care Center is in Downey You will be able to enjoy competitive premiums that are available to the students of Whittier College This HMO plan provides comprehensive and continuous coverage that lasts year round beginning on September 1 August 30 of the current academic year The plan is not just for you but also

    purpose of reporting to public health authorities the FDA or to alert individuals that have been exposed to a communicable disease Also if the Student Health Wellness Center may have reason to believe that a student is victim of abuse neglect or domestic violence it may disclose protected health information as required by law to social services or other governmental agencies that have been authorized to receive such reports Furthermore the Student Health Wellness Center may disclose protected health information to police or other law enforcement officials If a student is 18 years old and older his her medical records cannot be shared with anyone It is a legal document and the Student Health Wellness Center may not share any of its contents with anyone including parents unless the student s life is in danger or there is a signed release from the student Students also have the right to request to receive protected health information by alternative means of communication or at a different address or location Whittier College is required to obtain the student s permission before using or disclosing their protected health information except for the purpose of treatment payment and healthcare operations Any other use of a student s personal information must have the student s written consent before disclosure to any person Once granted students may revoke this consent in writing except to the extent that the Student Health Wellness Center has already taken action in reliance upon the consent Students have the right to request specifically restricted use or disclosure of their protected health information All requests for such a consent and or restriction must be made in writing Requesting Medical Records All medical records are strictly confidential Information from records will not be released to anyone without the written authorization of the patient as per HIPPA FERPA laws If you are requesting your medical records you will need to fill out an Authorization for Release of Patient Information allowing us to release your private health information The authorization form can be accessed in 4 ways Download it online Pick up a copy from the health center Request to have the form faxed to you Request to have the form mailed to you The authorization form must be filled out completely in order to process your request By law we may not release your medical information through a request made by phone or by e mail Requests should be made through Whittier College Student Health Wellness Center 13612 E Philadelphia Street Whittier CA 90608 562 464 4548 phone 562 464 4511 fax Medical records will not be released without a written authorization A few notes when requesting a copy of medical records The authorization form must be signed by the patient or parent legal guardian if student is under 18 years of age You may revoke your authorization in writing at any time This would not apply to any information already released Please allow 3 5 business days for processing There is a 5
