    Events Mobile Menu Office of Communications News Releases Campus Events Calendar The Rock For the Media Emergency Information You are here Home News Linda Biehl 65 2011 New Student Convocation Keynote Speaker Linda Biehl 65 2011 New Student Convocation Keynote Speaker Thursday September 29 2011 Alumna Linda Biehl 65 co founder of the Amy Biehl Foundation will be the keynote speaker at the 2011 Whittier College New Student Convocation on October 27 at 7 00 p m in the Ruth B Shannon Center for the Performing Arts 13406 Philadelphia Street Whittier CA Whittier College In 1993 Biehl s daughter Amy was killed by political radicals in South Africa while she was there as a student Linda and her late husband Peter turned the tragic death of their daughter into action by creating the Amy Biehl Foundation to keep their daughter s passion for helping others alive and to serve the needy of that country Biehl s lecture will include inspirational stories while she shares her experiences working in South Africa This event is free and open to the public Please note seating is limited first come first served The work of the Amy Biehl Foundation in Guguletu South Africa has had a direct impact on the lives of the people there and serves as a lasting model for social action In 2009 Biehl was awarded South Africa s highest honor for her exemplary work the Order of Companion of O R Tambo presented to her by President Thabo Mbeki The President s office cited her outstanding spirit of forgiveness in the wake of the murder of her daughter and contributing to the promotion of non racism in post apartheid South Africa Past recipients of this award include former U N Secretary General Kofi Annan and posthumously to Indian leader Mohandas

    Section News Events Mobile Menu Office of Communications News Releases Campus Events Calendar The Rock For the Media Emergency Information You are here Home News Whittier College Hosts Students From Kede College Whittier College Hosts Students From Kede College Wednesday June 1 2011 Nearly 100 students from Beijing China participated in the inaugural Whittier College Arts Immersion Course that ran from May 23 to May 27 The participants art students from KEDE College of Capital Normal University in Beijing participated in a week long series of lectures and fieldtrips that focused on multicultural art and design in Los Angeles Some of the excursions included visits to the St Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral San Gabriel Mission Olvera Street Disney Concert Hall Mayan Theatre Barnsdall Art Park The Gamble House and the Huntington Library among others Watch the KEDE farewell dinner celebration on YouTube Along with the 96 students seven administrators faculty and board members from KEDE College traveled with the group The distinguished group included the vice dean of the school of art design the vice director of international exchange and training the executive vice president of KEDE College as well as the chairman of the board of directors This intensive summer program is part of a developing partnership between Whittier College and KEDE College The Whittier College Arts Immersion program also enabled the visiting students to experience some traditional aspects of American Higher Education including an intramural game of football The KEDE students also had a chance to learn about the unique legacy of Whittier College s alumnus Richard M Nixon 34 Nixon s important role in opening China to the West provided the visiting students with pride at having an opportunity to sit in the same classroom as the 37th President of the United States Established seven years ago
