    Events Athletics Giving Alumni In This Section News Events Mobile Menu Office of Communications News Releases Campus Events Calendar The Rock For the Media Emergency Information You are here Home News Whittier College Receives Grant From Fletcher Jones Foundation Whittier College Receives Grant From Fletcher Jones Foundation Tuesday March 30 2010 The Fletcher Jones Foundation has awarded Whittier College a grant for 147 000 over the course of three years to establish the Fletcher Jones Foundation Undergraduate Fellows Program in Health and Science The funding will support 20 fellowships enabling students to engage in health related internships and science research The Fletcher Jones Foundation Fellowship program is part of the recently launched Center for Science Health and Policy at Whittier College The Fletcher Jones grant recognizes the extraordinary student body that is present at Whittier and the impressive student faculty research that is being done at the undergraduate level said President Sharon Herzberger Through this new fellowship program the Center for Science Health and Policy will receive the backing needed to train diverse leaders who will help address and solve the multitude of health issues facing our nation and world Annually six to seven Whittier College students will be selected as Fletcher Jones Foundation Fellows they will receive stipends and mentoring support for health related internships and research assistantships during the summer following their junior year and for continuing scholarly activity during their senior year A separate Student Research Fund will also be available to support research needs such as expendable supplies small equipment and materials as well as conference participation and research related travel assistance The Center for Science Health and Policy is designed to maximize student learning by advancing the College s deep commitment to interdisciplinary curricula collaborative teaching undergraduate research and internships and the integration of student

  • American Novelist Tim O’Brien to Keynote Whittier College's 107th Commencement Ceremony | Whittier College
    a special guest at Whittier College s 107th Commencement Ceremony on Friday May 28 9 a m in Memorial Stadium on the Whittier College campus During the event at which approximately 340 undergraduate and graduate students are expected to receive their degrees O Brien and Jackson will also each receive an honorary degree from Whittier a doctorate of humane letters L H D Tim O Brien O Brien is an American novelist who writes about his experiences in the Vietnam War and the impact that the war had on the American soldiers who fought there As a recent college graduate in the late 1960s O Brien was drafted into the infantry and was sent to Vietnam where he served from 1969 to 1970 He was part of the Americal division infamous for its participation in the My Lai massacre which occurred shortly before O Brien s arrival in Vietnam That event also figures in his writing most prominently In the Lake of the Woods Upon completing his tour of duty O Brien went on to graduate school at Harvard University and received an internship at the Washington Post His writing career was launched in 1973 with the release of If I Die in a Combat Zone Box Me Up and Ship Me Home a memoir about his war experiences In 1979 O Brien received the National Book Award in fiction for Going After Cacciato And In the Lake of the Woods received the James Fenimore Cooper Prize for Best Historical Fiction in 1995 and was named the best novel of 1994 by Time Magazine In 2006 all entering Whittier students read O Brien s book The Things They Carried As such the commencement address will be a meaningful way to bookend the graduating class Whittier experience O Brien earned his BA in political science from Macalester College in 1968 He currently lives in Austin Texas and is a visiting professor and endowed chair at Southwest Texas State University where he teaches in the creative writing program Keith Jackson Sportscaster Keith Jackson is well known for his 40 year long career with ABC Sports television his coverage of college football that spanned more than five decades as well as his deep voice and folksy down to earth style commentary Though best known for his college football broadcasts Jackson announced numerous other sports for ABC throughout his career including Major League Baseball NBA basketball NFL football boxing auto racing and the Olympic Games He began his career as a broadcaster in 1952 after graduating from Washington State University which he did under the GI Bill Working for KOMO radio in Seattle in 1958 Jackson became the first American sports announcer to broadcast an event from the Soviet Union a crew race between the Washington Huskies and a Soviet team He subsequently became a radio news correspondent for ABC News Radio and sports director of ABC Radio West before joining ABC Sports in 1966 For all his success he received the most acclaim

    Luc Montagnier to Speak at Whittier College Nobel Prize Winning Scientist Luc Montagnier to Speak at Whittier College Monday March 2 2009 Dr Luc Montagnier 2008 Nobel Prize recipient and world renowned virologist will give a special lecture HIV AIDS Research Past and Prospects to launch the new Center for Science Health and Policy at Whittier College on Thursday March 18 at 1 30 p m in the Ruth B Shannon Center for the Performing Arts 6760 Painter Ave Whittier CA 90608 Montagnier will also receive an honorary degree from Whittier a doctorate of humane letters L H D This lecture sponsored by the OSATO Research Institute is open to the public but seating is limited and reservations are required For more information or to reserve tickets please call Terrie Valenzuelaat 562 907 4219 Montagnier of the Pasteur Institute in Paris is credited with the 1983 discovery of the human immunodeficiency virus HIV identified as the cause of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome AIDS Inthe 20 years prior to the onset of the AIDS epidemic Montagnier hadalso made many significant discoveries concerning the nature of viruses as well as major contributions to the understanding of how viruses can alter the genetic information of host organisms Additionally as founder and director for the InstitutePasteur s viral oncology unit his work significantly advanced cancer research Montagnier s ongoing research focuses on the search for an AIDS vaccine or cure Montagnier is the co founder of the World Foundation for AIDS Research and Prevention and co directs the Program for International Viral Collaboration heis also president of the Houston based World Foundation for Medical Research and Prevention Montagnier has received more than 20 major awards including the Légion d Honneur the Lasker Award and the King Faisal Foundation International Prize known as the Arab Nobel
