  • 10 August 2000 - Tropical Depression #4 Off the Florida Coast
    Florida on 09 August 2000 GOES 11 visible and 10 7 micrometer InfraRed IR imagery above shows the exposed low level circulation and small clusters of convection that develop around the periphery of the tight circulation The depression formed over the relatively warm water near 28 C off the Florida coast but deep layer easterly shear was inhibiting further development GOES 8 visible cloud tracked winds produced by the CIMSS

  • 09 August 2000 - Elevated Smoke Layers on Satellite and Radar
    190 km from each radar site so the radar beam was intersecting these targets elevated smoke layers from fires in the northern Rockies at altitudes of 10 15 kft 3 4 5 km AGL The northern edge of a thicker more opaque elevated smoke layer can be seen on GOES 11 visible sinking southward across central Iowa and northern Illinois but this boundary was south of the radar reflectivity features GOES 11 6 7 micrometer IR water vapor imagery above right did show an elongated plume of cooler brightness temperatures perhaps indicating slightly elevated moisture content oriented NW SE across the region where the radar reflectivity features were seen This could be a thin plume of smoke that acquired some moisture via convective boundary layer pumping over northern Wisconsin the previous afternoon evening or over eastern Iowa during the overnight hours elevated smoke plumes have been detected by GOES water vapor imagery in previous cases A longer animation of GOES water vapor imagery showed a warming drying trend indicative of synoptic scale subsidence in the wake of a shortwave trough passing through the Great Lakes region the 12 00 UTC rawinsondes from Minneapolis Minnesota and Davenport Iowa showed elevated subsidence

  • 08 August 2000 - Low-Level Thunderstorm Outflow Over Iowa
    morning over southern Iowa The morning rawinsonde from Omaha Nebraska indicated that this cloudiness was strongly capped by a low level temperature inversion GOES 11 sounder Cloud Top Pressure CTP derived product imagery above right shows that the tops of low level thunderstorm outflow cloudiness across western Iowa were below the 700 millibars level orange enhancement In addition thick layers of elevated smoke hazy areas can be seen moving eastward

  • 14 July 2000 - Pine Lake, Alberta Tornado
    axis of higher moisture existed east of the developing convection the dewpoint just ahead of the storm at Red Deer CYQF was 61 F at 23 00 UTC and the dewpoint at Coronation CWCT increased from 41 F at 23 00 UTC to 55 F at 00 00 UTC Unfortunately the coverage of the GOES 10 Sounder only extended northward to about 50 North latitude preventing the ability to monitor hourly stability or moisture parameters in the pre convective environment The GOES 10 Sounder products did however hint that both an axis of instability and a moisture gradient were extending from eastern Montana where a severe thunderstorm watch had been issued northwestward into extreme southeastern Alberta and southwestern Saskatchewan Due to the high latitude 52 North and high tops 10 11 km above ground level of these storms a significant parallax correction is needed to correctly locate the satellite features on the ground This places the southern edge of the main storm anvil region 20 km to the south southwest visible IR closer to the location of Pine Lake The storms appear more elongated in the GOES 8 imagery because of the more extreme viewing angle of that satellite GOES 8 is located over the Equator at 75 W longitude GOES 10 is located at 130 W longitude The noise random black and white pixels in the GOES 8 and GOES 10 visible imagery was the result of an ongoing solar radiation storm that was affecting satellite communications GOES 8 visible Java animation GOES 8 10 7um IR Java animation Visible and IR data from the 23 56 UTC 5 56 PM MDT overpass of the NOAA 12 polar orbiting satellite are shown below Note the finer detail in the cloud top temperature structure due to the higher resolution of
