the ADL 3 0 scienceAppliance1 1 vmx file and open it Play the virtual machine When the virtual machine plays you may see a message that states that VT is disabled If you see this message you will have to change a bios setting on the host Shut down the virtual machine Reboot the host computer Enter the setup menu This is often done by holding the F2 button while the machine is booting Change the bios setting to allow virtualization Save the change Allow the host OS to boot Start VMware and play the virtual machine to continue As the machine starts you will see a question about if the machine has been moved or copied Answer I copied it If you are prompted to download VMware tools answer Remind me later Do not update the tools Logging in as scientist The virtual machine will now advance to the log in screen Log into the virtual appliance as the user scientist The password is scientist The scientist user has sudo privilege the password for sudo is also scientist You are now logged into a machine that has the ADL 3 0 the required COTS support scripts and the Glance

and the required perl COTS First install the non perl COTS as follows cd support install cots 4 1 sh This script will ask you for a user name and password These are the same user name and password that you used to download the setup scripts They are the username and password that you created when you registered for this website see the link in the top right hand corner of this page Note This script will expect the Gnu Tools gcc cpp g gfortran etc to be installed in specified locations See the Installing and Modifying Support Scripts section above for information on editing the script to specify the tools locations Next install the perl COTS The perl installation is composed of three steps Install perl Initialize CPAN Install the perl COTS Initiate the perl COTS installation as follows cd support install user perl for ADL4 1 sh Notes User input may be required for the CPAN initialization Follow the default answers using common sense If auto initialization is offered accept it You may have to exit from CPAN during the initialization If a message similar to the following is displayed type quit to exit from CPAN initialization cpan shell CPAN exploration and modules installation v1 9800 Enter h for help cpan 1 Installing ADL Note If you have not set up the environment do it now See before you begin ADL is installed using the installAdl sh script Open a command shell terminal go to the support directory and execute the script cd support installAdl4 1 sh ADL cotspatch userperl This script does several things Unpacks the ADL framework software source code Unpacks the IDPS Mx6 3 algorithm software source code Replaces the ADL build envSetup ksh script Patches the ADL software to be compatible with the envSetup ksh script Patches the ADL software to use the user installed perl If no user installed perl is desired the user can edit the script and remove the call to the install perl patch function from the main function The script looks for install packages tar files in the cspp adl downloads directory If the packages are not present the script will downloaded them You may be prompted for a user name and password These are the same user name and password that you used to download the setup scripts They are the username and password that you created when you registered for this website see the link in the top right hand corner of this page After the script has completed close and re open your command shell terminal to activate the ADL environment Note When you re open the command shell terminal you should no longer get a file not found error Installing the SSEC ADL Compatibility Patch Depending on your Linux platform you may need to also download and install the SSEC ADL compatibility patch The patch addresses two types of issues COTS compatibility with other commonly used science packages The most noticable is H5 ADL uses an old error disabling option which causes a run time error in ADL unpacker if used with a more recent version of the hdf 5 libraries The ADL 4 0 system had the same problem and a patch was provided to work around the issue ADL 4 1 Compiler compatibilty with various versions of GCC Most notably is a problem with the ADL make system that passes illegal compiler options to various subsystems Many versions of GCC ignore illegal options however some of them do not Some subsystems use XL compiler options when the GCC flag is used The patch SSEC ADL4 1 patch may be downloaded from the wiki s Downloads page it will NOT be downloaded automatically with the other ADL setup scripts Note You do not need to do this if you used the installAdl4 1 sh ADL cotspatch userperl command The patch should be applied over the entire ADL directory tree First copy the patch to your ADL HOME directory Then do the following cd ADL HOME patch p1 i SSEC ADL4 1 idps 5 7 patch If you have already built or tried to build ADL before installing this patch see below you will need to rebuild Building ADL The ADL software requires the environment to be set up correctly This is done with the envSetup ksh script This script is found in the ADL HOME build directory and if you have followed all of the preceding instructons it will run automatically to set up your ADL environment whenever you open a command shell terminal It may be necessary to edit the envSetup ksh script to make it compatible with your Linux installation In particular some lines in the setup ADL CSPP vars function at the start of the script may need to be modified to set environment variables correctly In particular line 21 export GCCLOC usr bin should be modified if necessary to specify the correct directory for the Gnu tools gcc cpp g gfortran etc and lines 35 through 39 export SSEC JC Cmd javac export SSEC CC Cmd GCCLOC g export SSEC CCr Cmd GCCLOC g export SSEC FC Cmd GCCLOC gfortran export SSEC FCr Cmd GCCLOC gfortran should be modified if necessary to specify the actually names of the tools in your installation Note If you have more than one version of the Gnu tools installed on your system it is important that the settings in envSetup ksh specify the same version of the tools as was used to build the COTS see the Installing and Modifying Support Scripts section above The user may also want to ensure that the LD RUN PATH and LD LIBRARY PATH environment variables lines 185 and 186 specify the correct directory locations for the appropriate library versions Note If changes are made to the envSetup ksh script at this point the user should close and re open their command shell terminal so that any changes are incorporated into the enviroment To build the ADL
