more detailed information regarding application criteria procedures and the selection process ENGINEERING Below is a summary of pre departmental admission departmental admission the General College Requirements and second degree application Details follow The Office of Admissions and Recruitment reviews all transfer applications to the College of Engineering COE makes the admission decision and notifies the students accordingly All transfer students are initially admitted to COE with pre departmental classification that is they are in COE but are not yet in a degree granting program such as electrical engineering or geological engineering COE contacts all transfer students offered pre departmental admission At that time students who have fulfilled all of the minimum course and grade point average GPA expectations called the General College Requirements may submit a separate application for possible departmental admission that is for admission directly to their intended degree granting program such as electrical engineering or geological engineering COE makes the departmental admission decision and notifies the students If admitted students start in their intended program in their first semester after transfer and their pre departmental classification is changed to departmental If not admitted students may still attend as a pre departmental student after transfer they should apply to the same or another engineering program as soon as they qualify Individuals with a prior undergraduate degree can apply for fall admission only and must be immediately admissible to their intended engineering program COE reviews all second degree applications and makes the admission decision Pre Departmental Engineering Transfer Admission All students must meet the UW Madison transfer admission expectations http www admissions wisc edu transfer requirements php In addition a strong match between the individual and engineering study at UW Madison is desired The Office of Admissions and Recruitment considers the student s overall application when making the pre departmental admission decision Academic performance in college must be given priority The student s academic record should indicate a strong likelihood of success in the higher level course work that will be taken immediately after transfer and as part of a required full time course load in COE Although admission is not guaranteed strong applications include factors such as completion of at least three math science courses in the General College Requirements final grades of B or better in all math science and engineering courses taken at least two semesters of grades on record at the time of application including at least one semester of full time at least 12 credits course work a cumulative GPA of 3 0 as well as a sustained pattern of semester GPA of at least 3 0 preferably higher and consistent success in increasingly more challenging course work Supplemental factors are also considered such as an application statement that addresses interest in engineering related co curricular activity if possible and at least one letter of recommendation attesting to academic ability Students who are near completion of a bachelor s degree e g within 24 credits at their current campus will likely not be admitted to COE The Office of Admissions and Recruitment makes the pre departmental admission decision and notifies students accordingly After transfer pre departmental students should apply for admission to a degree granting engineering department as soon as they have completed or are completing the General College Requirements and have identified both intended and alternate engineering majors Pre departmental students have a maximum of four semesters to fulfill the General College Requirements Departmental Engineering Transfer Admission Transfer students who are admitted as pre departmental engineering students are invited by COE to submit a separate application to be considered for direct admission to their intended engineering program Students who have fulfilled or have in progress at the time of application all of the General College Requirements may apply Because admission depends upon departmental capacity and because most programs reach capacity admission is competitive Students must submit their final grades directly to COE as part of the application review COE makes the departmental admission decision and notifies students in June or January prior to their first semester at UW Madison If not admitted to their intended engineering program students may still attend as a pre departmental engineering student General College Requirements The minimum requirements to be considered for admission to engineering degree granting programs are listed below Admission is competitive Fulfilling the General College Requirements does not guarantee students admission to their intended engineering program GENERAL COLLEGE REQUIREMENTS FOR APPLICATION TO AN ENGINEERING DEGREE GRANTING PROGRAM At least 24
