    Services Campus Visits Special Events Testing CLEP Program Residual ACT Miller Analogies Test MAT Current High School Students High School Dual Credit Step Ahead Program You are here Home Academics Natural Behavioral Sciences Mathematics MESSAGE Degrees Offered Major in Mathematics The major in mathematics consists of a minimum of thirty three semester hours which include Calculus I II III and IV and eighteen additional hours of mathematics courses above Calculus IV Three hours of seminar courses are required from Mathematics Seminar I II III and IV Mathematics Seminar I is required Most mathematics majors pursue the Bachelor of Science degree A typical program of study might consist of the courses listed below Bachelor of Science Core Religion REL 101 102 6 hours English Composition ENG 101 102 6 hours Literature ENG 211 212 6 hours Communication COM 101 3 hours History HIS 101 102 or 201 202 6 hours Social Behavioral Science Geography political science sociology psychology economics 6 hours Science Biology chemistry physics or physical science 8 hours Pre calculus MAT 150 3 hours Fine Arts ART 200 MUM 101 or THE 135 3 hours Physical education Activity courses 2 hours Additional natural physical science or computer courses 6 hours Computing 6 hours Total 55 hours Courses for the Major Mathematics Seminar I MAT 109 1 hour Calculus I II III IV MAT 151 152 251 252 12 hours Upper level math Linear algebra differential equations foundations statistics geometry abstract Algebra discrete math probability 18 hours Seminars MAT 209 309 or 409 2 hours Total 33 hours Courses for a Minor Courses in one area outside mathematics 18 21 hours Electives Any courses 19 22 hours Total for Graduation 128 hours Programs of Study Students wanting to teach at the secondary level in mathematics must complete certain core requirements prior to admission into the teacher education program To be admitted students must 1 maintain an overall grade point average or 2 5 better on 44 hours of teacher education core courses with grades of C or better in English composition and 2 must have a score of 21 or better on the ACT with no score below 18 on any subtest OR achieve the required score on the PRAXIS I including all subtests reading writing and mathematics Students must complete a course of study which includes certain upper level mathematics courses as well as a sequence of professional education courses Students completing this program will have satisfied the requirements for a minor in Teacher Education A typical curriculum would consist of the courses listed below Teacher Education Core English Composition ENG 101 102 6 hours Literature ENG 211 212 6 hours Communication COM 101 3 hours History HIS 101 102 or 201 202 6 hours Social science Geography political science sociology economics 3 hours Psychology PSY 201 3 hours Laboratory science Biology chemistry physics 8 hours Physical science PHS 151 or 201 3 hours Mathematics MAT 131 or 150 3 hours Fine Arts ART 200 MUM 101 or THE
