  • What is Osteopathic Medicine? | William Carey University
    The AOA was recognized as the accrediting body for osteopathic medical education by the U S Department of Health Education and Welfare in 1952 and by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation in 1967 Philosophy of Osteopathic Medicine Near the end of the 1800s Dr Still wrote a book called Philosophy of Osteopathy that helped explain why osteopathic skills are applied and why osteopathic health care is beneficial The new method centered on treating the body by improving its natural functions rather than using medication The major tenets of this then new philosophy included three fundamental concepts The parts of the body make up a unified whole The effects of any disease are felt in varying degrees throughout the body Therefore the entire body can be mobilized to help combat illness Treating specific isolated symptoms ignores the interconnectedness of the body The body has a natural ability to self regulate and self heal Using natural treatment methods like osteopathic manipulative treatment OMT rather than drugs alone promotes healthy body functions that are designed to battle disease and help repair injury Preventive medicine including good nutrition and fitness is important for sustaining healthy body systems Through appropriate treatment the individual s so called host response innate healing ability should be stimulated and maximized The musculoskeletal system is a key element in maintaining health This system makes up two thirds of the body s mass and includes the bones muscles and cartilage It impacts and reflects the condition of all other systems in the body circulatory nervous OMT is the central element of the application of this philosophy Doctors of osteopathy in addition to being trained to provide standard medical care use their hands to diagnose problems relieve pain restore range of motion and balance tissues and muscles in order to promote

    Prospective Students What is Osteopathic Medicine Application Process WCUCOM participates with other osteopathic colleges in a centralized application processing service called AACOMAS American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine Application Service The first step in applying to WCUCOM is completing an AACOMAS application Once AACOMAS has verified and processed this primary application they will send the individual s application to the colleges which the applicant designates to receive them AACOMAS takes no part in the selection or rejection of applicants AACOMAS applications can be obtained at http www aacom org or at AACOMAS 5550 Friendship Boulevard Suite 310 Chevy Chase MD 20815 7231 Phone 310 968 4100 WCUCOM will download and print all primary applications sent by AACOMAS They will be reviewed and applicants felt to present competitive applications will be sent a secondary application The WCUCOM Admissions Committee will consider applications from all qualified individuals however strong preference is given to applicants from Mississippi and other Gulf South regions The Admissions Committee seeks those individuals who clearly identify with the WCUCOM mission statement Other factors include academic preparation for a medical school curriculum personal attributes and motivation to become an osteopathic physician THE WCUCOM Admissions Committee will consider applicants with a complete file for an interview A complete file must include the following materials Completed AACOMAS application and completed WCUCOM secondary application including official MCAT scores taken within three years of application A non refundable supplemental application fee of 50 made payable to WCUCOM Letters of recommendation from the following sources A physician preferably a D O Two science biology chemistry or physics faculty members who have taught the applicant in a science course or A premedical committee Recommendations must be written within the two years prior to making an application They may be mailed directly to WCUCOM by

    Procedures effective July 1 2013 It is the official policy of WCUCOM that recruitment and selection of students for admission and consideration for financial aid must not discriminate on the basis of race ethnicity color sex gender religion national origin age or disabilities In compliance with federal law including provisions of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 and the bylaws of the University William Carey University does not discriminate against any person on the basis of race color national or ethnic origin sex gender age or disability in admissions or in the administration of its education policies scholarships loan programs athletic and other school administered rights privileges programs and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the school The minimum academic requirements for admission are A baccalaureate degree or completion of at least three fourths 90 semester hours or 135 term credit hours of the required credits for a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college of university The baccalaureate degree is preferred and preference is given to those candidates who will have earned the degree prior to matriculation in the medical school program The Medical College Admissions Test MCAT Students must take the exam and have the official scores sent directly to AACOMAS as part of their primary application MCAT test scores are valid for three years from the original date Satisfactory completion of the following college courses including laboratory work English composition and or literature 6 semester hours General chemistry 8 semester hours Organic chemistry 8 semester hours Physics 8 semester hours Biological sciences 12 semester hours These basic requirements must be taken and passed at a regionally accredited college or university Online courses are not accepted Credit by examination is not available at WCUCOM Official

    Principles and Practice II 7152 3 TOTAL 44 Second Year OMS 2 The second year curriculum is organized around systems based content Integrated courses include clinical medicine pharmacology pathology neural and behavioral sciences and OP P Professionalism and interpersonal communication continues with integration through all case based learning sessions and standardized patient encounters The semester concludes with a formal preparatory time for COMLEX Level I examination Instruction in OP P continues weekly throughout every year of the medical school curriculum including integration within case based learning cases and many standardized patient encounters OMS 2 CURRICULUM 2014 2015 Course Course Number Credit Hours Systemic Pathology I 6222 3 Systemic Pathology II 6223 4 Neural and Behavioral Science I 6231 3 Neural and Behavioral Science II 6232 2 Medical Microbiology I 6261 3 Medical Microbiology II 6262 3 Pharmacology I 6271 4 Pharmacology II 6272 3 Clinical Science I 7291 8 Clinical Science II 7292 7 Osteopathic Principles and Practice III 7253 2 Osteopathic Principles and Practice IV 7254 2 TOTAL 44 Clerkship Curriculum The clinical clerkship curriculum leading to the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine D O degree is a 20 month program designed to educate and equip osteopathic physicians with skills necessary to enable them to enter graduate medical education programs The curriculum is designed to support the WCUCOM mission and emphasizes primary care In the third and fourth years students learn patient care and develop clinical technical skills and serve as members of a medical team Students spend time with clinical faculty at regional hub sites throughout the Gulf South A hub site must have at least one accredited full service hospital and may also contain critical access hospitals public and private clinics and individual practitioners Travel time between facilities within a hub site is limited to 60 minutes to minimize the amount that travel encroaches on student study time or contributes to student fatigue Hub sites provide access to a library virtual or real space study space sleeping space if needed for call computer access and Internet access The first 12 months of the clerkship experience occurs at a single hub site whenever possible Clerkship rotations provide increased continuity in training and offer students experience working with a variety of allied health professionals Third Year OMS 3 During the third year students become competent in patient care delivery through enrollment in the following required clinical rotations Family Medicine Emergency Medicine Internal Medicine Pediatrics General Surgery OBGYN Women s Health Mental Health Basic procedures are demonstrated and practiced by students in each area of study Students learn about the standard operating procedures of the hospital and office practice Clerkship rotations provide increased continuity in training and offer students experience working with a variety of allied health professionals Fourth Year OMS 4 In the fourth year a primary purpose of instruction is to help students apply the didactic background and preliminary clinical training to more intensive clinical experiences Students are given greater patient care responsibilities than in the OMS 3 year

    Electronic Resources Student Catalog Handbook Statistical Information Faculty Staff Professional Development Faculty development sessions Journal Articles Student Catalog Handbook Research You are here Home Current Students WCUCOM Curriculum Curriculum Revision Development Curriculum revision development and refinement require the consideration of the many changes occurring in the healthcare environment instructional settings and approaches and in educational and medical technologies Based upon current research in medical education we conduct ongoing assessment of the existing curriculum to determine strengths gaps and redundancies with the aim of developing changes that reflect best practices in the delivery of osteopathic medical education Our approach combines ongoing pilot changes as well as larger scale changes in overall course and curricular structure This quality improvement initiative is guided by special faculty working groups the Curriculum Council and the Council for Quality Assurance The safe delivery of patient centered care is our ultimate goal for our graduates with training based on a learner centered model of instructional delivery The overarching parameters for change involve moving from a discipline based curriculum to a curriculum with greater emphasis on the integration of the biomedical and clinical sciences The structure remains grounded in osteopathic core competencies as identified by the AOA and
